This festive delicacy was introduced in the late 19th century as a competitor to the popular Frankfurter Brenten, but never attained their popularity. Nevertheless, Pfeffernüsse belong on every good cookie plate. To make them, you'll need:
Ingredients
- 90 grams of butter
- 2 tablespoons of sugar
- 80 grams honey
- 200 grams flour
- 1/2 packet baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cardamom
- 1 pinch cloves (ground)
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 50 grams candied lemon peel
- 50 grams candied orange peel
Preparation:
Knead all the ingredients into a dough, then leave it in a cool place for 1 to 2 days. Form then from the dough flat balls, which you put on a baking tray covered with baking paper or greased. Bake at 180 degrees in a preheated oven for about 20 minutes. The finished peppernuts you can now optionally coat with chocolate or sugar icing.
