Christian's (Anders W. Berthelsen) life is in ruins since his wife Anna (Paprika Stehen) left him and moved to Argentina with her new lover. His relationship with his son Oscar (Jamie Morton) is barely existent and Christian's former passion, his small wine business, has also more or less fallen into disuse. And so there are really only two options: either Christian puts an end to it all, or he finally gets off his butt and fights for his wife before the divorce papers are signed. Christian decides on the latter, grabs Oscar and unceremoniously flies to Buenos Aires with him to win Anna back. Too bad their new partner, popular soccer star Juan Diaz (Sebastian Estevanez) is not only younger and more attractive, but also much more passionate and wealthy than Christian. But he is not so easily discouraged. In an environment that is completely foreign to him, he gets to know completely new sides of himself and hopes that this will convince Anna to continue their marriage. But given the dreamlike life Anna leads in Buenos Aires, it seems long too late for that...

Superclassico...My Wife Wants to Get Married is romantic comedy and culture clash comedy rolled into one, blending Nordic charm and the sunny disposition of Argentina into an entertaining whole. Of course, the film's greatest appeal comes from the scenes in which Christian is confronted with a culture completely foreign to him in Buenos Aires, having to deal with a love-struck housekeeper, a grumpy winemaker or very polite muggers. These encounters make for some wonderful moments that somewhat console the fact that director Ole Christian Madsen seems to have run out of ideas towards the end. Because after the very original and sparkling beginning and the fast-paced first half, the comedy loses more and more momentum especially in the last third. The finale then comes across as a bit weak, which may also be due to the fact that some of the film's plot lines, such as Christian's friendship with the old winemaker, just fizzle out into nothingness and don't get any real resolution.

Nevertheless, the comedy leaves quite a positive impression overall. The very endearingly drawn love story between Oscar and the tourist guide Veronica (Dafne Schiling), for example, Christian's desperate attempts to escape a football broadcast in which his adversary Juan is celebrated like a god, or even the conversations he has with the men at the counter in a small bar despite the language barrier, are full of charm and endearing wit, so that in the end one is happy to overlook the rather disappointing ending.

The fact that the film works well is also due to the good chemistry between the actors. Especially Anders W. Berthelsen (Italian for Beginners) and Paprika Steen (Adam's Apples) harmonize extremely well with each other. You absolutely take them for the estranged couple, but between whom there is nonetheless a very special bond, which is hugely important for the emotional part of the story.

Superclassico...My Wife Wants to Get Married seems to squander a lot of its potential by the end. Still, Ole Christian Madsen has managed to make a nice film with a lot of Nordic charm, some very amusing dialogue and heartfelt moments. Lovers of light-footed comedies can therefore warmly recommend this entertaining trip to Buenos Aires. Worth seeing
