The Historisches Museum Frankfurt brings city history to life

The Historisches Museum Frankfurt brings city history to life

Category: Museums & Art

2017 brings big changes for the Historisches Museum. For at the end of the year, the large new building will finally be opened, which will offer a lot of additional exhibition space on four floors. After the concrete block built in the early 70s, which never really fit into the appearance of the Römerberg, was demolished in 2011, the completely renovated old buildings were first reopened in 2012. This marked the first major step for the new History Museum. With the new building, the return of the Children's Museum and the new Museum Square accessible to all, this process will then be completed in 2017. Then the History Museum will be able to fulfill its goal of documenting Frankfurt's history and bringing it to life even better.

But even now, a visit to the museum is a real must for anyone who wants to get to know the city's eventful history better. The museum houses objects from a total of 15 collection areas, ranging from paintings to photographs, graphics, ceramics, glass, metal, everyday culture, household or fashion and textile. The permanent exhibitions take visitors through Frankfurt in the Middle Ages, the Late Middle Ages, the 16th - 18th centuries and up to the present day. In addition to the imperial insignia, the clock room in the Rententurm or the valuable earth globe by Johannes Schöner from 1515, the Treuner brothers' model of the old town is one of the major highlights of a visit to the History Museum. In addition, of course, there are regularly exciting temporary exhibitions and special events. Since all of this already gives the Historical Museum a very special position in the city, one can be extremely curious to see what will be offered after the opening of the new extension building and its departments "Frankfurt once? (divided into five thematic areas) and "Frankfurt now" will look like.

The special guided tour of the Historical Museum with Lisbet Windsor II.

If you would like to discover the Historical Museum in a very special way, you should definitely join one of the many guided tours. As a Frankfurt original, Bäppi is a perfect fit for the Historical Museum and he also takes his cultural mission as a museum guide very seriously. Of course, Her Majesty does not miss the opportunity to spice the whole thing up with hearty Frankfurt charm and humour. But the information content is not neglected in this entertaining tour either. So if you want to get to know parts of the Historical Museum in an unusual way, you should not miss this royal tour. But of course there are also numerous other thematic tours, such as those around the Rententurm, which can be warmly recommended to anyone interested.
