Aerial bomb found in the Main - defusing on Sunday

Information on the discovery and defusing of a World War II bomb

Frankfurt (ots) - (mc) On the morning of 03 January 2017, rescue divers of the Frankfurt Fire Department found a 50-kilo aerial bomb under water during an exercise in the Main River at Holbeinsteg. The explosive ordnance disposal service currently assumes no danger after examination of the explosive device.

On Sunday, 08 January 2017, the explosive ordnance disposal service will recover the bomb and then defuse it.

For this purpose, the evacuation of the danger area is necessary. Affected residents in this area will be informed by leaflets, loudspeaker announcements and by radio warnings. The operation will additionally be accompanied via the social media of the Frankfurt police.

All residents in the danger area must leave their homes as well as the area by 09:30 on Sunday, January 08, 2017. Following this, a check will be carried out by the police. A total of around 900 people will be affected by the evacuation. Road traffic will be closed for the duration of the measures in the area.

The area is divided a north zone above and a south zone below the Main (see image of the map).

In both zones, a care center will be set up for the duration of the measures. This will be located on the north side in the union building at Wilhelm-Leuschner-Strasse 69 and on the south side the gymnasium of the Schillerschule at Morgensternstrasse 3 will be available.

The Holbeinsteg as well as the bicycle and pedestrian path between the Friedensbrücke and Untermainbrücke on the south side will be closed immediately and until further notice due to preparations for the salvage and clearance work. There will be disruptions to public transport for the duration of the measures on Sunday. These relate primarily to bus line 46 as well as tram lines 15 and 16.
