Frankfurt Airport is expanding its internal transport system: from April 2026, a new Sky Line train will connect Terminals 1, 2 and the new Terminal 3. The facility will complement the existing system and create a continuous connection between the southern extension and the northern part of the airport.
The central hub is a 220-metre-long station at Terminal 1. It is located on the arrivals level and is directly connected to the regional and long-distance train station and the adjacent airport hotel. This brings Terminal 3 closer to the existing airport centre in terms of transport. The journey time between Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 is up to eight minutes. The route is 5.6 kilometres long. More than 4,000 passengers can be transported per hour and direction, separated into Schengen and non-Schengen traffic. The service is scheduled to operate all year round. A total of twelve trains will be used, each consisting of two carriages with separate areas for different traffic segments. The first train was delivered to Frankfurt from the Siemens factory in Vienna by heavy goods transport in October 2022.
A separate building has been constructed for maintenance and control. It houses the control centre, a washing facility for the vehicles and an additional maintenance vehicle.
With the new connection, the airport is strengthening its infrastructure in the run-up to the commissioning of Terminal 3 and improving the integration of the terminals with supra-regional rail transport.
