After arson: relief action for the book market at the Bockenheim campus started

Not only for male and female students it has simply been part of studying since the 1960s: The book market at the Bockenheim campus. Who has not regularly looked for bargains here and found many a book treasure? But many other people also love and use this very special institution at the Bockenheimer Warte. All the more saddening was the news that on Friday, March 19, 2021, at around 04:20, there was a fire in the warehouse of the book market in the Bockenheimer Anlage involving several boxes of books. The fire department was able to extinguish the fire, which was most likely caused by arson and resulted in property damage of about EUR 1,000. Nevertheless, many books fell victim to the fire.

The countless charred books had to be loaded into nine rubble containers with an excavator and professionally disposed of with trucks. The heart of many a book lover bled. The response to the news of the fire was correspondingly great: Numerous books were donated in order to be able to restart the operation of the book market immediately. The Frankfurt Henninger Brewery then also donated 15 beer set tables, which have served as book tables ever since. The spontaneous willingness to help showed how much the book market is close to the hearts not only of the people in the Bockenheim district. But now this charming institution is in serious danger.

Because the disposal costs incurred by the fire amount to a handsome €10,000 - an immensely high sum that the market's operator cannot afford. The problem: There is no fire insurance for an open air book market. Therefore, the book market on the Bockenheim campus is now dependent on your help:

Since Tuesday, 20.04.2021, runs on Brandstiftung am Büchermarkt Campus Bockenheim | betterplace.me a donation campaign. Alumni of Goethe University, Bockenheim neighbors and all other book lovers are called upon to ensure the preservation of the book market with a contribution of their choice. All we can say is: Join us, every Euro counts!

Donations of books are still very welcome (exception: please no light novels, there are still a lot of them in stock).

The initiators of the fundraiser:

The siblings of the market operator

Nathalie Schroeder, Manuel Borschel (employees of the neighboring car rental company KFZ-Referat)

Oliver Strank (Head of Local Council 1)

Sascha Mahl (Frankfurt city guide)
