An institution goes - MUTTER ERNST must close

An institution goes - MUTTER ERNST must close

Last week, many Frankfurt residents were surprised by sad news: the traditional restaurant MUTTER ERNST must close after 81 years when its lease expires in April 2020. This truly marks the end of an era and Frankfurt loses another piece of its original charm. Whether it was hand cheese and beef sausage, liver cheese with fried egg, ribs with cabbage or meat sausage with potato salad, the most diverse people met at MUTTER ERNST to enjoy one thing together: Quite original coziness and a piece of authentic Frankfurt.

But that will be over in a few months. Last week Stephan Ullrich, who had taken over the restaurant about 20 years ago, had received the notice. A renovation of the house would be out of the question for the investor from Berlin. He wants to tear it down and build a new one. It is almost impossible to take legal action against this, as the lease is due to expire anyway. Not only Ullrich, but also his many regular guests are shocked by the imminent end of MOTHER MERRY. Also head of the economic department Markus Frank has spoken out after the impending closure became known. He expressed the hope that a solution would still be found for the traditional restaurant.

Even if there will probably not be such a solution at the current location, Ullrich has already received offers for new locations. Whether there is something suitable among them, can not be said at the moment. Of course, it would be desirable for Ullrich to be able to continue the tradition of the restaurant at another location very soon after the closure in the Alte Rothofstraße - even if it will be difficult to transfer this very special atmosphere to a new establishment. But it is clear that Stephan Ullrich wants to continue the business in his restaurant at the current location until the last moment. So there will be enough time for all regular guests and all those who want to pay a visit to the restaurant to say goodbye to MUTTER ERNST in its old form. And who knows, with a bit of luck it will soon continue somewhere in Frankfurt with the same name, the same concept and a similar flair. We're keeping our fingers firmly crossed for Stephan Ullrich and all of us who love MOTHER ERNST.
