Angela Merkel, who steered Germany's fortunes as chancellor for 16 years and led the country through numerous crises, will present her memoirs "Freiheit" (Freedom) in Frankfurt on March 17, 2025. At the invitation of the Literaturhaus, in collaboration with Schauspiel Frankfurt, the former Chancellor will read from her 736-page book, which she wrote together with her long-time confidante Beate Baumann. The work provides a unique insight into Merkel's life in two German states - 35 years in the GDR and 35 years in reunified Germany.
In her memoirs, Merkel looks back on her childhood, youth and studies in the GDR and gives an impressive account of the dramatic year 1989, when the Wall fell and her political career began. The autobiography also sheds light on her conversations with leading figures in world politics and explains precisely and vividly how key decisions were made during Merkel's time in government that still shape our times today. She not only describes political turning points, but also her attitude towards freedom, which is a central theme of her book.
The advance sale for the event in the main auditorium of Schauspiel Frankfurt starts on January 10, 2025. Members of the Literaturhausverein and subscribers to the Schauspiel will have the opportunity to purchase tickets from January 7. Admission costs 34 euros, concessions 12 euros. If you don't want to miss out on the reading, you should hurry, as demand is likely to be high.
