The summer is drawing to a close and with it the new season begins in Frankfurt's cultural institutions. This is also the case in Frankfurt's numerous galleries, which are once again celebrating their 23rd season opener together in 2017. And this one comes up with an innovation, with the aim that the art weekend organized by the Interessengemeinschaft der Galerien Frankfurt am Main will be strengthened regionally and established as an important event for contemporary art in Frankfurt and the region.
"Strolling through Frankfurt, discovering art, meeting gallery owners and artists - from September 8 to 10, the Main metropolis will once again be dominated by contemporary art. This year, for the first time, selected off-spaces and museums will be taking part in the season opener alongside Frankfurt's galleries. Visitors can thus expect an even more comprehensive programme with more than 50 exhibitions of the most diverse genres: painting, sculpture, photography, installation, film, performance and more," says Head of the Department of Culture and patron Ina Hartwig.
Thus, for the first time, the program for the start of the season includes important institutional institutions such as the Museum für Moderne Kunst (MMK), the Schirn Kunsthalle, and the Städel Museum.
Other non-commercial exhibition spaces ("Off-Spaces") enrich the spectrum of positions on display. This year, galleries that are not members of the Interessengemeinschaft Frankfurter Galerien are also welcome to participate in the season opener. In addition to the exhibitions, visitors can also look forward to a varied supporting program with guided tours in German and English, artist talks, performances, readings, lectures, and concerts. On Saturday evening, starting at 6 pm, there will be a "Gallery Night" at the Schirn Café as a get-together of the galleries, institutions and off-spaces, artists and art enthusiasts.
