What began as a small hotel show in Ohio in 1943 has now been the most successful ice show of all time for 75 years. To date, 103 productions have thrilled more than 329 million viewers worldwide, earning HOLIDAY ON ICE a well-deserved entry in the Guinness Book of World Records. Over 6,000 professional figure skaters, including 14 Olympic medalists, have stood on the ice for the various shows and slipped into 29,200 costumes specially made for the productions. A truly impressive success story that will be celebrated next year with a grand anniversary show.
Whoever thinks that smaller rolls will therefore be baked this year is sorely mistaken. Because the current show, ATLANTIS, which premiered Thursday at noon in the sold-out Festhalle, is spectacular to say the least. Robin Cousins, creative director and choreographer of the production, and his team have created a stirring mix of choreography, costumes, lighting and music that magically brings the myth of Atlantis to life for nearly two hours. The first part of the show depicts a world caught between the love of nature, industrial progress and decadence. Colorful costumes, rousing dance numbers, wonderful aerial acrobatics and even a few illusions reveal the different facets of the island kingdom before it sinks into the sea in a shower of light and fire.
After intermission, the audience is then immersed in a fascinating underwater world. Fluorescent colours are used to bring sea creatures to life, before a couple of divers are allowed to perform a delightfully comical underwater ballet. Especially in this second half of the show, the choreography, the music and the costumes provide some real goosebump moments. At the latest now it becomes clear that ATLANTIS belongs to the most beautiful and best HOLIDAY ON ICE productions of the last years. The ensemble, consisting of over 30 international professional skaters, is simply magnificent and ensures that the audience is taken on a wonderful journey that culminates in a brilliant finale. You almost don't want to go back to the grey everyday life.
The premiere in Frankfurt was supported by the twin sisters Valentina and Cheyenne Pahde, known from the RTL series "Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten" and "Alles was zählt". The two, who have been on the ice since childhood, can be seen in a total of four scenes in each tour city on one date, thus fulfilling a childhood dream. Valentina Pahde sums up what makes HOLIDAY ON ICE so special: "You can't imitate this atmosphere in the halls, you have to experience it live." We can only agree with that and therefore recommend you: Secure a ticket quickly and visit one of the performances in Frankfurt.
