Because of Coronavirus: Schools in Hesse will be closed

As announced in a press conference on Friday afternoon, all schools and daycare centers will also be closed throughout Hesse starting next week. The state government has decided to take this step after the number of people infected with the coronavirus is also steadily increasing in Hesse. Minister President Volker Bouffier said: "We are facing challenges that are extraordinary". And he added: "I would like to ask for your understanding and assistance." This refers generally to the care of social contacts, but also around specific areas of our daily lives.

In order to curb the explosive spread of the coronavirus, it has been decided that there will be no compulsory teaching at Hessian schools with immediate effect. That means no classes will be held, but schools will remain open. There is no compulsory schooling for pupils, but compulsory service for staff. The reason for this is that for special occupational groups (police, fire brigade, judiciary, emergency services, doctors, civil protection, nursing professions, etc.) child care is guaranteed. As a further exception, schools are to be opened for high school graduation, should there be no fundamental change in the situation.

Kitas will also only be open for children of parents who work in the professions that are necessary to maintain the necessary infrastructure. Schools and daycare centres will remain closed for all other children. This arrangement will initially apply until after the Easter holidays, after which the situation will be reassessed.

At the universities, lectures will begin on April 20, but normal university operations will continue.

Volker Bouffier again emphasized that these measures were taken according to the current state of affairs. Since the state of medical knowledge changes almost daily, there may also be a reassessment of the situation at short notice.

As soon as there is new information, we will also report on it.
