Biodiversity Action Week in Frankfurt

Experience nature, learn more about insects and gain

(ffm) Exciting, diverse, beautiful and sometimes quite wild - that is nature. Anyone who wants to discover, explore and experience it can embark on the "Biological Diversity Adventure" not far from their own front door: As part of the BioFrankfurt Action Week from 18 to 27 May, numerous organisers from the Rhine-Main region are offering activities for young, old and the whole family, in which nature in and around Frankfurt plays the leading role.

Around the International Day of Biological Diversity on 22 May, the "Experience Biological Diversity" Action Week takes place every year. During this period, the association BioFrankfurt - the network for biodiversity and numerous partners from environmental protection and nature conservation in the Frankfurt area offer exciting and varied events for visitors young and old, where nature can be experienced in a special way. "This is the twelfth time we are organizing the action week. It is tremendously exciting how many facets of biological diversity there are to discover in the Rhine-Main region," says Bruno Streit, spokesman for BioFrankfurt. "Recreation, adventure, insights - you can find and enjoy all of these here not far from where you live."

About 50 different actions from over 20 organizers are available to choose from, many of which are free of charge. This year, a particularly large number of actions have a connection to the topic of insects - this is no coincidence: "The biomass of flying insects has declined by 75 percent in the last 27 years. What many people who are disgusted by insects see as nothing negative at first glance is actually a huge problem," explains Martina Teipel from the Weilbacher Kiesgruben Nature Conservation House, which this year is organising an insect festival during the action week, among other things. "We all depend on insects as pollinators - if we don't do something, life on Earth will change completely." The Frankfurt Institute for Sustainable Development (FINE) is offering a bee-saving hands-on activity, the Stadtwaldhaus is hosting a creepy-crawly festival and still other activities revolve around the topic of insects. In addition, this year's action week has much more to offer: You can take part in an entertaining journey through the history of the Hessian national drink Äbbelwoi at the MainÄppelHaus Lohrberg, the newly emerging wilderness at Monte Scherbelino can be discovered together with employees of the project "Cities dare wilderness", the Frankfurt Zoological Society will report on the exciting facets of its nature conservation work at a campfire evening at Frankfurt Zoo and anyone who has always wanted to be present at a bird launch will find what they are looking for at Berger Hang.

Art lovers will also get their money's worth: the Kunsthaus am Lohrberg offers a painting workshop at the garden pond, the Vogelkundliche Beobachtungsstation Untermain presents an organ concert with "bird compositions" and young photographers get the chance to improve their skills at the already fully booked children's photography course at Frankfurt Zoo.

Since last year, the action week has also been putting out feelers in the Offenbach area: There, a water explorer day is held followed by a pizza meal.

For particularly diligent action week visitors, there is even something to win this year: Those who have their visit to at least three different events confirmed with a stamp will be entered into a prize draw. The main prize: an exclusive guided tour of the giraffes at the Opel Zoo in Kronberg for two people, including the opportunity to feed the animals from your hand. The stamp card to print out as well as all further information and the complete program for the action week 2018 is available at: <link http: www.biofrankfurt.de aktionswoche _blank>
