BOOKFEST - the Frankfurt Book Fair Festival

06.10.2017 | 08:15 Clock | Culture
BOOKFEST - the Frankfurt Book Fair Festival

It's that time again: from 11 to 15 October, everything at the Frankfurt Book Fair will revolve around reading. Exciting new publications, discussions with authors and new impulses from the industry will once again attract numerous trade visitors and interested members of the public to the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2017. But that's not all: this year, the Frankfurt Book Fair is expanding its activities around the exhibition grounds.

"BOOKFEST is an open platform for productions revolving around literature and other creative industry content within the city of Frankfurt. Culture and literature lovers, digital pioneers and creative minds, the international publishing world, trade fair visitors and Frankfurt residents are all welcome at all events," says Markus Gogolin, Director of Strategic Marketing at the Frankfurt Book Fair, summarising the concept. "With BOOKFEST, we are pursuing the goal for the next few years of providing publishers, authors and exciting networks in the industry with a stage outside the exhibition grounds", adds Lars Birken-Bertsch, Director Business Development at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

New: the BOOKFEST BISTRO

This year, the official opening of the festival will take place on Tuesday, 10 October, at 6 p.m. in the BOOKFEST BISTRO (NM57, Neue Mainzer Str. 57). Édouard Louis (S.Fischer) will present his manifesto for a new kind of literature there. Julia Encke, author of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung (F.A.S.), will lead through the evening. The original text will be translated and read by Heinrich Schmidt-Henkel. On the days of the fair, the doors of the BOOKFEST BISTRO will open daily at 6 p.m.; the literary programme will begin at 9 p.m. each day. On Wednesday, October 11, Sonja Heiss will read from her novel Rimini (Kiepenheuer & Witsch). The conversation will be moderated by F.A.S. author Julia Dettke. On Thursday, October 12, visitors to the BISTRO will celebrate 50 years of Trikont with Franz Dobler, Christof Meueler and Markus Naegele - the history of Germany's oldest independent label. The evening will be musically accompanied by Eric Pfeil. "Täglich alles - neue Statusmeldungen von Stefanie Sargnagel" is the title of the conversation between Stefanie Sargnagel and Tobias Rüther on Friday evening, October 13, while on the Saturday of the fair everything will revolve around "Die Probleme der anderen" from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Quarterly (F.A.Q.): the conversation between Theresia Enzensberger and Friederike Haupt will be moderated by Rainer Schmidt, Responsible Editor of the F.A.Q..

Industry meeting place after the fair: the BOOKFEST LOUNGE

As last year, the BOOKFEST LOUNGE (Bar AMP, Gallusanlage 2) will again be the meeting place for the industry, design lovers and digital creatives in 2017. This is where people drink, exchange ideas and celebrate together. "Doors Open" is also here at 6.00 pm. Each night will feature music from a different publishing network starting at 9pm: Wednesday starts with the popular Meetup series "Pub'n'Pub" (#pubnpub), which takes place at changing German as well as international locations. At "Byte The Book", publishers from all over the world will come together on Thursday. The magazine makers around Indiecon will provide content as well as musical entertainment on Friday evening, just like last year.

BOOKFEST NIGHT on the Saturday of the fair: Frankfurt celebrates the book, creativity and dialogue!
Finally, on Saturday, 14 October, BOOKFEST reaches its climax: together with the Initiative der Gastronomen Frankfurt e.V., the bars and restaurants of the Bahnhofsviertel will open their doors to literature during BOOKFEST NIGHT. At Falafel 1818 (Münchener Str. 38), for example, there will be a slam reading by Weissbooks author Jey Jey Glünderling, while Torsten Seifert (Klett-Cotta) will be following in the footsteps of legendary author B. Traven at Chez IMA (Niddastr. 58). Patricia Hempel will be reading from her novel Metrofolklore (Klett-Cotta) at Plank (Elbestr. 15), in which she describes a very special love story. The poetry slam collective Main Slam e.V. will be performing at the Donkey Bar (Taunusstr. 21). In addition, visitors to BOOKFEST NIGHT can also experience literature up close at Yok Yok (Münchener Str. 32), Walon & Rosetti (Moselstr. 15) and Maxie Eisen (Münchener Str. 18). Complementing this, ARTE Concert welcomes two great musicians to a concert at Frankfurt's Club ZOOM (Brönnerstr. 5-9) at 8pm: US soul titan Cody ChesnuTT drops by, also joining Irma, the French singer and songwriter with roots in Cameroon.
