The Deutsche Bundesbank opened its extensively redesigned money museum to the public on 17 December 2016. After an extensive construction and renovation process, it presents itself to the public as a modern place of learning and experience. "We want to provide clear information about money, its history and the tasks of modern central banks," said Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann at the opening of the new Money Museum. The exhibition will help visitors to understand abstract concepts such as price stability or financial stability in their everyday lives. "In the museum, the topics of monetary policy can be directly experienced by means of everyday experiences", Weidmann explained. The aim is to convey the benefits of stable money, he said, because a stability-oriented population is an important prerequisite for a successful monetary policy.
Gold bars to touch and 360-degree cinema
In a tour, the multimedia exhibition takes visitors through the four thematic areas "Cash", "Book money", "Monetary policy" and "Money global". In everyday situations such as a staged supermarket or a replica bank branch, visitors are informed about the work of central banks, the importance of stable prices or payment transactions. In doing so, visitors can look at each topic based on the present or on history.
"A special feature of the new Money Museum is a 12.5 kilogram gold bar from the Deutsche Bundesbank's holdings, which visitors can take in their hands", stressed Executive Board member Carl-Ludwig Thiele. The film experience in the 360-degree cinema is also special, taking visitors on a journey to unusual places of money around the world, for example. Another highlight of the exhibition is the Money Cabinet, which uses outstanding museum pieces to tell the story of money from the beginnings of coinage to the present day. The new museum appeals to visitors of all ages in a variety of ways - with texts, pictures, videos and audio clips. At around 60 media stations, information about money is conveyed in a playful way (with quizzes, memory or puzzles) or in-depth content is offered. For young visitors, there are child-friendly showcases at their eye level.
Larger exhibition space
In order to do justice to all the topics, the exhibition space has been expanded to 1000 square metres and an additional room has been created for special exhibitions. The first special exhibition "60 Years of the Bundesbank in the Media will open in the summer of the anniversary year 2017. "The Money Museum will be the Bundesbank's shop window in Frankfurt", said Executive Board member Johannes Beermann. Therefore, the cafeteria has also been enlarged and redesigned. The Bundesbank expects significantly more visitors than before its closure on September 1, 2014. In the past, the Money Museum, which has been in existence since 1999, recorded around 40,000 visitors a year, many of them schoolchildren. The building was expanded and converted by KSP Jürgen Engel Architekten in Frankfurt am Main, while the exhibition was staged and implemented by Milla & Partner in Stuttgart.
Lectures, themed tours, workshops and museum rallies
In addition to visiting the exhibition, the Money Museum offers lectures, themed tours, workshops and museum rallies for children and young people as well as teacher seminars. The exhibition is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday from 9:00 to 17:00 and Wednesday from 9:00 to 20:00.
