"Christmas magic at the Liebieghaus

07.12.2016 | 15:34 Clock | Citywhispers
'Christmas magic at the Liebieghaus

This year, the Christmas season can be enjoyed in a particularly diverse way at the Liebieghaus Skulpturensammlung. From December 8 to 11, the Liebieghaus and the surrounding park will shine in a sparkling glow of lights at an atmospheric Christmas market. The "Christmas Magic" offers around 15 stands with high-quality design products and culinary delicacies as well as a varied accompanying programme for all age groups. The programme is dominated by the current exhibition "Holy Night. The Christmas Story and its Picture World".

On Friday, 16 December, there will also be a Christmas reading with Michael Quast in the Metzler Hall of the Städel Museum to accompany the exhibition. The well-known actor and cabaret artist will recite Christmas texts from all over the world, from the Bible to the bruitist nativity play of the Dadaists. The "Holy Night" exhibition itself will also be open to visitors over the two Christmas holidays and between the years, on New Year's Day and on 2 January. Featuring numerous masterpieces from the history of art, it impressively demonstrates the surprising variety of pictorial themes in the Christmas story and offers a narrative that is as exciting as it is chronological, from the Annunciation to Mary to the Holy Family's return home from Egypt.

"Christmas Magic" - the Christmas Market at the Liebieghaus

On the occasion of the exhibition "Holy Night. The Christmas Story and its World of Images", the Liebieghaus invites visitors to a Christmas market in its enchanting garden for the first time on the third weekend in Advent. Surrounded by festive lights, selected delicacies and design products will be on offer in wooden stalls decorated for Christmas. As part of the varied accompanying programme for children and adults, visitors can expect, among other things, a small nostalgic children's carousel, a Christmas puppet theatre, performances by the choir of the Schillerschule Frankfurt, a reading with Helge Heynold (hr2-kultur) and exciting short tours of the special exhibition. Saint Nicholas will also be dropping by. In creative workshops, young visitors can make the figures of the Christmas story out of clay or design little companions for the Advent season out of paper. Under the professional guidance of a master wood turner, they can also try their hand at working with wood and make their own small works of art from this material. The "Christmas Magic" will open on Thursday, December 8, at 5:00 p.m. with a festive concert by the Erlopeas Trombone Quartet in the Liebieghaus garden.

As a Christmas gift from the Liebieghaus, an admission fee of 5 euros (the family ticket costs 10 euros) for visiting the Christmas market and the exhibition applies during the duration of the "Christmas Magic".

About the exhibition "Holy Night. The Christmas Story and its Imagery"

Until 29 January 2017, the Liebieghaus Skulpturensammlung will shed light on one of the best-known narratives in Christian culture: the Christmas story. The comprehensive special exhibition "Holy Night. The Christmas Story and its Imagery" is dedicated to the diverse events and multifaceted stories surrounding the so-called "Holy Night" and focuses on its depictions in sculpture, painting, graphic art, and other artistic genres. A total of around 100 precious objects from over 40 international collections, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the Louvre in

Paris or the Vatican Museums, can be experienced. In addition to well-known motifs such as the Annunciation to the Virgin Mary or the adoration of the baby Jesus by the shepherds and the Magi, the exhibition features many narratives and images that have now been largely forgotten. These include episodes such as Joseph's doubts, the circumcision of Christ or the miracles on the flight of the Holy Family to Egypt. Finally, two large multi-figure and highly significant Nativity ensembles from Naples and Tyrol can also be seen in the Liebieghaus. The show offers an entertaining, exciting and often surprising look at medieval art and a history worth rediscovering
