A large bakery in Frankfurt is facing closure: the Glockenbrot bakery, which belongs to the Rewe Group, is to be closed within the next three to five years. This decision will affect 480 jobs. For the employees, this means a period of great uncertainty.
According to Rewe, negotiations with the works council are planned in order to find socially acceptable solutions. The focus is on a reconciliation of interests and a social plan. The closure is justified with fully utilized capacities and the high investment for a possible new building, which the company would like to avoid.
New industrial bakery planned nearby
While the site in Frankfurt is being closed, there are plans for a new industrial bakery in Erlensee, not far from Frankfurt. Harry-Brot, a market leader in the production of baked goods, wants to take over a Rewe site there. However, the decision still depends on the approval of the antitrust authorities.
Harry-Brot is already a major player in the industry and operates ten locations across Germany with a total of 5,000 employees. The company also plans to take over the second Glockenbrot site in Bavaria and secure the 320 jobs there.
The Glockenbrot bakery, founded in 1904, has been part of the Rewe Group since 1986 and produces exclusively for Rewe and Penny. The closure of the Frankfurt plant marks the end of a long era.
