Defusing a world war bomb on the exhibition grounds

During construction work on the grounds of Messe Frankfurt, an American 500 kg aerial bomb from World War 2 was discovered yesterday (Tuesday). The World War II bomb has been secured and is in a stable position. On Friday, June 5, the bomb is to be defused, making it necessary to evacuate the surrounding area. About 2700 people will be affected. They will be informed by flyers. If you want to check out if it might affect you, you can find a map showing the evacuation zone here: https://arcg.is/1Cv8rz0

What makes evacuation a little easier is that facilities like nursing homes or hospitals are not in the evacuation area. All persons in the area to be evacuated who are not dependent on outside assistance must have left their homes and the entire area marked on the plan by 09:00 on Friday, June 5, 2020.

During this time period, people in need of assistance or bedridden who have notified the fire department in advance of their need for transportation will also be evacuated by emergency services and disaster response units and transported to the care center or other facilities.

These individuals are asked to register by 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 04, 2020, via the citizen telephone line to ensure transportation by emergency services. In addition, transport registration can also be made online on the fire department's website (www.feuerwehr-frankfurt.de).

A care centre will be set up in Exhibition Hall 11 for people affected by the evacuation. This will be open from 08:00. However, in order to avoid Corona infections within the care centre, it is pointed out that the distance rules are to be observed and a mouth-nose covering is to be worn. Furthermore, in order to trace any chains of infection, the contact details of all persons present in the care centre, including duration of stay and area of stay, will be documented.

As soon as the evacuation measures have been completed, the evacuation area will be controlled by the police. No concrete information can yet be given about the duration of the defusing. The end of the closures, which is expected for 18:00, will be announced by radio announcements and via social media channels.

From 08:30, public transport (subways, trams, buses) will be suspended in the affected area. S-Bahn service will be maintained until 10:30 a.m. with the exception of the Messe S-Bahn station. The Messe S-Bahn station will no longer be served as of 08:30. The respective transport companies will independently inform about cancellations, timetable changes and closures on their channels.

People affected are asked to also inform their neighbours. Up-to-date information is available via radio, the social media channels of the police and fire departments, as well as the website of the fire department www.feuerwehr-frankfurt.de.

The Frankfurt Fire Department is setting up a citizens' hotline at 069 / 212 - 111. It can be reached at the following times: Thursday, 04.06.2020, from 08:00 to 18:00 Friday, 05.06.2020, from 06:00 until the end of the operational measures.

Persons currently subject to an isolation or quarantine order issued by the Health Department are asked to contact the Health Department at 069 / 212 44374 or by email at info.infektiologie@stadt-frankfurt.de to coordinate evacuation procedures.
