No question: Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (GB/US 1968) is a milestone in film history. Not only the fascinating camera work with one of the most legendary re-cuts in film history, but also the mixing of science fiction and philosophical themes revolutionized the genre. Countless times the film has been quoted or copied in other works. And numerous directors state that they have been influenced by Kubrick and his masterpiece. On April 02, 1968, the film had its world premiere and 50 years later it is still considered one of the most important works of science fiction cinema.
Reason enough to mark this anniversary with an exhibition. From March 21 to September 16, 2018, the origin story of 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY will be the focus of a special exhibition at the Deutsches Filmmuseum. It will be the world's only official exhibition on Kubrick's cult film 2001. On display will be numerous original exhibits from international collections and from the Stanley Kubrick Archive at the University of the Arts London. The exhibition shows original designs, models, costumes, props, shooting schedules, production documents and photographs from Kubrick's archive. It answers the question of how Kubrick's vision of the future came about, and to what extent it came to pass.
In addition, it places the film in the context of its time and looks at the history of its reception: 2001 has left its mark in more than 200 films, in music videos and advertising, in design, painting, architecture and poetry. A separate section of the exhibition presents works from different art genres inspired by Kubrick's masterpiece.
