A little dance film made film history in 1987. The story of Baby and Johnny moved moviegoers around the world and the two soundtrack albums became million-sellers. Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey became global stars, and at least Swayze was able to build a substantial career on "Dirty Dancing" fame.
30 years later, the film's popularity continues unabated. The songs are still in everyone's ears, and "Dirty Dancing" consistently pulls in good ratings during regular TV broadcasts. After a not-so-successful live tour in tow of the film, the musical version was performed for the first time in Sydney in 2004, in which the screenwriter of the film was also significantly involved. Now, not everything that says "Dirty Dancing" on it necessarily has to be good. That was just painfully proven to fans by the completely unnecessary TV remake. But in the case of the musical, it has succeeded in capturing the spirit of the film and transporting it skilfully to the stage.
And so a first guest performance in Frankfurt two years ago was met with great enthusiasm by the audience. The choreographies, the songs and of course such legendary moments as the sentence "I carried a watermelon" do not miss their effect even in the stage version. After the great success of the first guest performance, "Dirty Dancing" is now coming back to the Alte Oper from 19 December to 7 January. The perfect opportunity to throw all the everyday stress away and let yourself be carried away by this enchanting musical to the year 1963.
Rousing dance interludes, immortal songs and a wonderful story about growing up and about first love - these are the ingredients that have made the film so successful and which also ensure that the musical is a lot of fun and enjoyable. One can assume that this guest performance will once again be celebrated with frenetic applause from happy visitors.
