Eintracht coach Niko Kovac leaves for Bayern Munich

Eintracht coach Niko Kovac leaves for Bayern Munich

Update: Nico Kovac's move has now been confirmed. Eintracht have confirmed that head coach Niko Kovac informed the sports board of Eintracht Frankfurt Fußball AG on Thursday that he intends to leave the club for FC Bayern Munich at the end of the season and that he has a contract option to do so. The entire team was informed of this in the morning. Sporting director Fredi Bobic and Niko Kovac agreed wholeheartedly to focus all their energy on achieving their sporting goals in the Bundesliga and DFB Cup until the end of the contract on 30 June 2018.

The original report:

Shock among Eintracht fans: according to media reports, it will be Niko Kovac, of all people, who will replace Jupp Heynckes (72) as coach at FC Bayern Munich from 01 July. Although the former professional player's contract still runs until June 30, 2019, Kovac had secured an exit clause that would allow him to terminate the contract early should FC Bayern or two other international clubs make him an offer. And that is apparently now the case.

Clarity will probably not come until noon today after an announced press conference. But many fans are already up in arms. Especially because of Kovic's statement that there was no reason to doubt that he would still be coach of Eintracht next year, many are extremely upset. But there is also a lot of understanding and gratitude. After all, the coach and the team had harmonised very well, which had brought Eintracht to the upper reaches of the Bundesliga table this season. You can't blame Kovac for wanting to take advantage of such an opportunity, said one user. This was echoed by another fan: "We had a great time with him, thanks for that and good luck to him and his family."

If the news is confirmed today, it will be interesting to see how it affects the rest of the season. Whether it takes away motivation from the players or destroys the interplay between coach and team that has been so good so far. But perhaps everyone involved realises that this is just the way the football circus is. As Kovic himself said: "So much happens in football. I don't know what will happen tomorrow."

We will of course continue to keep you updated!
