Eissporthalle Frankfurt is pleased with record visitor numbers in 2019

(ffm) The team of the Eissporthalle Frankfurt closes the past year with an extremely positive balance: in 2019, around 617,500 people visited the sports venue on Bornheimer Hang. That is more than ever before. The lion's share of this figure, namely around 272,500, is made up of visitors to public ice skating. This means that the ice sports hall has an increase of around 33,000 more visitors in regular operation compared to 2018. The large number is also made up of members of the eleven ice sports clubs who regularly train there (121,000 in 2019) and people who attend events in the ice sports hall (30,800). For example, every year around 4,000 visitors come to "Family on Ice", the opening event at the beginning of the main season, when admission is free and, for the first time in the season, the outer ring is also open to the public.

"As the encouraging figures show, the ice sports hall continues to exert great, unbroken appeal. It is very much appreciated by many citizens from the city, from the region and from the clubs," says Sports Director Markus Frank. "My special thanks go to the employees who, with the same team strength, master the growing numbers and the associated higher demands brilliantly."

For years, the ice rink, which opened in 1981, has recorded growing visitor numbers. People come from Frankfurt and the surrounding area up to a distance of about 150 kilometers. One reason for the attractiveness of the ice sports hall far beyond Frankfurt is its size: skaters can let off steam on 9000 square meters - making the ice sports hall the largest contiguous ice skating surface in Germany. The 400-metre long outer ring is also a special feature. This area can be skated on daily during the main season, i.e. from November to mid-March. In addition, 2000 pairs of rental skates are available. Last but not least, the steady growth in visitors is favoured by mild winter weather, which means that other sports such as tobogganing or skiing are not readily available in Hesse.

Surprisingly, there are strong increases in the number of visitors to the events in the years in which the Frankfurt Lions are particularly successful. For example, in 2004, when the Löwen (then still Frankfurt Lions) became German champions, around 250,000 visitors came to the sports venue and in 2017, for the DEL 2 championship title, as many as 240,000 people came.

In order to maintain the attractiveness of the ice sports hall, several areas have been successively renovated since 2018 without any restrictions for users. For example, the hall lighting was recently completely converted to energy-efficient LED technology. The valuables compartments in the strap-on hall and the floor there are expected to be renewed this year. In addition, the ice rink will be brought up to the latest fire protection standards. In total, the investment costs amount to around 3.8 million euros. The renovation should be completed by 2021, when the Frankfurt ice rink celebrates its 40th anniversary.
