Frankfurt Airport reopens Terminal 2

Frankfurt Airport reopens Terminal 2

For many months, eerie silence reigned in Terminal 2 of Frankfurt Airport. Here, where thousands of passengers and visitors otherwise provided plenty of hustle and bustle and life every day, absolute standstill was the order of the day for over a year. But that is now changing: On 1 June, Terminal 2 will reopen to passengers, airlines and visitors. This means that the multi-storey car parks and the connections to and from Terminal 1 with the SkyLine and buses will also be fully available again. However, things will not be quite as usual here either at the start. The Visitors' Terrace, for example, will remain closed for the time being. The Frankfurt Airport excursion destination is preparing to reopen the popular viewing platform in August. Interested parties can find out the exact opening date at www.FRA-Tours.com.

The gastronomic offer is also still limited. Some restaurants and services are available again for passengers and visitors - but only "to go" for now. As in Terminal 1, the opening times are based on current legal requirements and initially on the basic needs of passengers. The consumption of food is generally permitted everywhere. However, as this is done without a mask, passengers and visitors are asked to take particular care to maintain hygienic distances during a meal.

In addition to catering establishments, press and book shops are also open. In the transit area, guests can expect duty free and travel value offers depending on their destination. Hygiene products are available in the aforementioned shops as well as from vending machines. Other services available include: Pharmacy, Currency Exchange, Tax Refund, Customs and Car Rental. A daily updated list of open shops and restaurants, as well as information on opening hours and Click & Collect options, can be found on the travel homepage.

Passengers should check which terminal their airline departs from before arriving at the airport for flights departing from June 1. An overview of the airlines based in Terminal 2 from June is provided by the travel website www.frankfurt-airport.com

"We are delighted that Terminal 2 is finally reopening after more than a year. This means we are well prepared for the expected passenger numbers for this summer. It goes without saying that we are also implementing extensive infection control measures here to ensure the highest possible level of health safety for our passengers and employees," says Sascha König, Head of Resource Management Terminals at Fraport AG. A total of 3,000 floor markings and 480 infection protection screens were installed at the check-in counters, every second seating area was cordoned off and 30 disinfectant dispensers were set up. "However, compliance with infection control measures is also very much the responsibility of each individual," König stressed.

Parking facilities at Terminal 2 will be available for unrestricted use again from June 1. As passengers are increasingly travelling by car due to the ongoing pandemic situation, it is strongly recommended to book a parking space in advance. Important: Those who have already booked a parking space at Terminal 1 and are now departing from Terminal 2 do not need to do so. The transmitted QR code also works when entering the underground car park P8 and P9 at Terminal 2.

Due to the drop in traffic caused by the pandemic, Terminal 2 has been out of operation since March last year. The airport operator used this time to carry out repairs and upgrades to the terminal, which opened in 1994: The terminal hall shines in new light thanks to the replacement of a total of 3136 panes, which were inserted into the five existing skylights. By the end of the year, an additional 5,550 m² of bitumen roof and 2,440 m² of concrete strips will be refurbished. In addition, the four central escalators in the building will be successively renewed. All technical installations as well as lines and power supply have also been checked.
