Frankfurt Book Fair to become a presence fair again in 2021

Frankfurt Book Fair to become a presence fair again in 2021

For a long time, those responsible for the Frankfurt Book Fair had hoped to have the fair take place as a presence fair in 2020 with a sophisticated hygiene concept. But shortly before the planned start, the Fair had to be moved completely online. This is not to be repeated in 2021. So the 73rd Frankfurt Book Fair (20-24 October 2021) is planned as a presence event with supplementary digital formats. Flexible adaptability to pandemic developments is at the heart of the planning. Canada will present itself as Guest of Honour.

"The Frankfurt Book Fair will once again be an important meeting place in 2021 - for the book industry, for authors and readers," emphasised Book Fair Managing Director Juergen Boos. "The industry needs exchange and visibility more than ever. Over the last few months, we have held intensive talks with our customers and created a fair concept tailored to the needs of our exhibitors. With adapted participation conditions, generous cancellation conditions and our flexible programme, we want to make it easy for exhibitors in Germany and worldwide to decide in favour of a presence in Frankfurt. Health protection for exhibitors and visitors is always our top priority. That's why we plan flexibly and can quickly adapt our concept to requirements." The 73rd Frankfurt Book Fair is supported by funds from the NEUSTART KULTUR programme of the Federal Government: This funding will be passed on to the exhibitors*, so that they can expect significantly lower stand prices.

The Presence Fair

The plan is to occupy Halls 3, 4 and 6 as well as the Forum and Festhalle. The Literary Agents & Scouts Centre (LitAg) will be at a new location in Hall 6.2. The Frankfurt Book Fair's innovative themed areas, THE ARTS+ and Frankfurt Audio, will be centrally located in the Forum, Level 0. The presentation of Guest of Honour Canada will remain in the Forum, Level 1. In the Festhalle, ARD and other media partners will once again provide a large stage - all events are to be streamed live. With the Frankfurt Workstations in Halls 3, 4, 6 and in the Forum, a flexible presence format has been developed - the workstations can be rented by the day. The registration deadline for participation in the presence fair is 31 May 2021.

Digital offerings

Parallel to this, the Frankfurt Book Fair is working on digital formats: The matchmaking offer and the digital rights platform Frankfurt Rights are being optimised. The Frankfurt Conference programme and the successful networking format "The Hof" are to be continued. The event calendar and exhibitor catalogue will be available in the Frankfurt Book Fair app and online. "We held intensive discussions with our customers following the Frankfurt Book Fair 2020 and received very valuable feedback. We are optimising our digital offering based on this feedback," said Juergen Boos.

Health protection has priority

The safe holding of the attendance event is guaranteed by a detailed hygiene concept and framework conditions adapted to the pandemic situation: The Frankfurt Book Fair is planning with a spacious hall layout and significantly widened aisles to direct visitors*. The minimum size for exhibition stands this year is 8 instead of 4 square metres. The additional costs associated with this will not be borne by the exhibitors, but will be financed by funds from the Federal Government's NEUSTART KULTUR programme. All fair participants must register in advance. The admission numbers for visitors will be controlled and adjusted in accordance with the infection control regulations in force in October: This also includes that the Frankfurt Book Fair will already be open to the public on the Friday of the Fair (22 October 2021).

Guest of Honour Canada

Under the motto "Singular Plurality", Guest of Honour Canada will present its literature and culture at the Frankfurt Book Fair this year with a diverse programme. With over 300 new publications planned by 248 publishing houses, the Canadian literary scene is in for an extraordinarily productive year. The Canadian delegation, made up of celebrated authors, illustrators and artists, is looking forward to being part of the hybrid Frankfurt Book Fair in October.
