Frankfurt celebrates the Day of German Unity with music: 'Germany sings and sounds'

Frankfurt celebrates the Day of German Unity with music: "Germany sings and sounds" on 3. October 3, 2024

On October 3, 2024, Frankfurt am Main will once again be one of the central locations for the nationwide campaign "October 3 - Germany sings and sounds". The initiative invites all citizens to celebrate the Day of German Unity with open singing and musical contributions in public squares. The aim of the event is to send a strong signal for peace, democracy and cohesion through the unifying power of music.

In the run-up to the big singing event at 7.00 pm, there will be two thanksgiving services from 5.30 pm: in the Freie Evangelische Gemeinde (Oeder Weg 6) and in St. Leonhard (Am Leonhardstor 25). The evening will then be officially opened on the Römerberg from 6.30 pm with a kick-off talk. Christine Lieberknecht, former Prime Minister of Thuringia and witness to the peaceful revolution, will speak about the importance of unity and democracy.

At 7.00 pm, the communal singing will begin on the Römerberg. The musical program will be supported by numerous Frankfurt choirs and music groups, including the Vocalensemble Liebfrauen, the choir of the European Central Bank, Sound of Praunheim, the pop choir 'N', the choir of the Bundesbank and many other ensembles such as the Frankfurt trombone choirs and the vocal ensemble Vielharmonie from Sachsenhausen. Choirs from schools, parishes and other organizations - such as the Eschersheim Family Choir and the Musical Kids - will also be taking part. Overall, the program promises an impressive variety of musical performances.

Songs from different genres and languages will be performed on the Römerberg. In addition to well-known classics such as "We Shall Overcome" and "Von guten Mächten", modern pieces such as "Tage wie diese" and the anthem "Die Hoffnung lebt zuerst" will also be sung together. With songs in Ukrainian, Arabic and Hebrew, the evening will also send out a signal against anti-Semitism and racism and for solidarity with the people in Ukraine and the Middle East.

In Frankfurt, where up to 3,500 visitors are expected, the evening will be all about freedom, democracy and cohesion. The "3 October - Germany sings and sounds" campaign will once again bring people of all generations and cultures together this year and send a strong signal for a peaceful and united future.

The central citizens' festival for German Unity Day is taking place in Schwerin this year, but Unity Day will also be celebrated in Frankfurt with a varied program. Frankfurt is showing that music is a unifying element that gives hope and builds bridges in difficult times.
