Frankfurt Christmas Market 2022: As before and yet different

21.11.2022 | 19:45 Clock | Citywhispers

Since Monday, 21. November, the starting signal for this year's Frankfurt Christmas market fell, is in the next four weeks much as before: there are again more stands, than last year, when only a slimmed-down version of the pre-Christmas hustle and bustle was allowed to take place. There was again an official opening ceremony with music, as well as the Advent concerts "International Christmas" on the stage Römerberg, the daily Advent carol singing in the Liebfrauenkirche, the city ringing on November 26 and the visit of Santa Claus will take place again. Everything as we know and love it. But there are also changes. Some will be noticeable, others rather unnoticed.

For the first change, the acting mayor Dr. Nargess Eskandari-Grünberg wanted to provide. As head of the city after the ousting of Lord Mayor Peter Feldmann, Eskandari-Grünberg wanted to arrange the opening ceremony differently than her predecessor. The chain of office remained in the closet and people from the city stood on the stage. "The Christmas market is for the people of Frankfurt, so they are also part of the opening," said the mayor. Together with two girls from Ukraine, who now live in Frankfurt, she then also pushed the button through which Christmas tree "Manni" was brightly lit for the first time. Subsequently, there was then a performance of the popular hit band voXXclub, which provided with Christmas songs for the right mood.

2022 there will be deficits for the first time

Due to the fact that costs have increased in almost all areas, the Frankfurt Christmas market will probably make losses for the first time. Admittedly, for example, energy is saved with the Christmas tree ("Manni needs with 4900 LED lights significantly less electricity than his predecessors with about 7000 lamps). And also with the catering trade the conditions rent was increased. Also, some decorative elements that cost energy were omitted, always careful that the atmosphere does not suffer. But the bottom line is that it probably won't be enough to cover costs with revenue, as in the past - even though up to 2 million people are again expected to attend the market during its four-week run. For Thomas Feda, managing director of Tourismus+Congress GmbH, however, there is no question that these deficits will be covered, because the Christmas market is far too important for the city: for tourism as well as for retail, gastronomy and the general image of the city.

For Thomas Roie, chairman of the Schaustellerverband Frankfurt Rhein-Main, it is enormously important that despite (or precisely because of) the increased costs everywhere, the sales prices are kept largely at the previous year's level. The children's carousel must remain just as affordable as the mulled wine, because after all, the Christmas market guests would also have financial worries. Roie hopes to be able to cushion the additional costs arising for the showmen by increased visitor numbers to some extent.

From November 21 to December 22, 2022, 207 booths are distributed over an area of 1.4 km. Among them are 40% gastro stalls, but also 40% arts and crafts and other sales stalls. In addition, there will be confectionery and five rides for children. The "Rosa Weihnacht" on Friedrich-Stolze-Platz is back again, as well as the Christmas wholesale market, which celebrated its premiere in 2021. Here there is another innovation that is guaranteed to become a popular photo motif: A 16-meter-high Christmas pyramid awaits guests against an imposing high-rise backdrop. Really beautiful!

Advent walk through the new old town

Another highlight around the Christmas market are the Advent walks through the new Old Town. Together with a certified tour guide, participants discover the winding alleys and squares of the new Old Town on a one-hour tour every day at 5 p.m. and learn all sorts of things about the ensemble of 15 reconstructions as well as 20 new buildings and then enjoy the culinary offerings at the Frankfurt Christmas Market. During the tour, each participant receives a voucher for a bag of almonds of their choice. Exclusively bookable is the Advent experience for groups.

Glühweintasse 2022

A popular collector's item is the Frankfurt mulled wine cup! This year's motif, which refers to the 175th anniversary of the German National Assembly in Frankfurt's Paulskirche next year, marks the end of the series that was launched seven years ago. A new series will then be launched in 2023.

100 Years of Frankfurt Artists Christmas Market

A great anniversary will be celebrated in 2022 by the Frankfurt Artists' Christmas Market, which first took place 100 years ago. For 75 years, it has been organized by the BBK Frankfurt (Berufsverband Bildender Künstlerinnen & Künstler Frankfurt e.V.). organized. In the Paulskirche will be from November 22 to December 22, the BBK annual exhibition with works by 54 artists. In the Römerhallen will be an exhibition with artists' market of the BBK from December 02 to 22. Here 51 artists will exhibit works and offer them for sale. Open is the 100th Frankfurt artist Christmas market daily from 12 to 20 clock, on 22 December until 18 clock.
