On Sunday, 10 March, Frankfurt city police were called to the bus station in Stuttgarter Straße for an unusual find: a plastic bag packed with 52 fire salamanders!
The fascinating animals are classified as a "specially protected species" under the Federal Nature Conservation Act and the Federal Species Protection Ordinance and may not be caught or harmed. The city police officers acted immediately, opened the bag and supplied the salamanders with oxygen.
Investigations indicate that these salamanders may have come from Eastern Europe. The city police have therefore filed criminal charges for unauthorized import and attempted trafficking.
The rescued salamanders were taken safely to the quarantine station at Frankfurt Zoo, where they are now safe.
