Frankfurt Cleanup: Around 735 kilos of garbage at Hafenpark alone

Wigs, nitrous oxide cartridges and loads of cigarette butts
Summary after two days of Frankfurt Cleanup: Around 735 kilos of garbage at Hafenpark alone

Many volunteers may have thought to themselves on the second day of the sixth Frankfurt Cleanup: Piece by piece, they collected broken glass from the lawns in Hafenpark on Saturday, March 16, picking up crown caps and cigarette butts one by one and throwing them into the garbage bags. It is this "small stuff" that Frankfurt's Head of Climate and Environment Rosemarie Heilig spoke about when welcoming the more than 200 volunteers, which makes cleaning up a lot of work and is also particularly harmful to nature: "Discarded butts pollute the waters. Their ingredients - such as nicotine or heavy metals - are pure poison for fish and other organisms," warned the head of the environmental department. "Anyone who carelessly drops litter is committing an outrage against nature!" For her, dealing with garbage in parks and green spaces is also a question of attitude: "Some people treat their surroundings with respect, others obviously still have to learn to do so", said Heilig.

A total of around 735 kilos of garbage was collected on the central Frankfurt Cleanup day of action at Hafenpark and on the banks of the Main. In addition to bottle caps and loads of cigarette butts, this also included wigs, scrap metal and empty laughing gas cartridges. A total of 5029 people registered for collections in 39 districts for the sixth Frankfurt Cleanup. More than at any previous Frankfurt Cleanup. Under the motto "Join in for a clean city", the entire city population was invited to take part in the spring cleanup. The collection took place over two days. On Friday, March 15, groups of companies, schools and kindergartens were already out and about. The city-wide spring clean was once again organized this year by the Clean Frankfurt staff unit, #cleanffm and the FES, with the support of the Parks Department.
