Frankfurt Easter Market celebrates anniversary

For the 35th time, the popular charity event for MS sufferers in Frankfurt and Hesse will take place on the weekend of March 9 and 10. Since the premiere in 1984, the beautiful Easter market is characterized by the fact that it is completely free of commercialism and is held for a good cause, of which organizer Ingrid Bauer is rightly proud. Also in the anniversary year the visitors may look forward to plentifully decorated Easter eggs, easterly decoration articles in addition, to sweet temptations of Konditorweltmeister Bernd Siefert.

Lovers of handicraft elaborately worked on Easter eggs and original springlike decoration articles can look forward to a various selection at approximately 60 conditions. There will be plenty of decorated eggs in a wide range of variations to buy. "Also two new egg painters show their work, which are on the one hand wrapped with copper wire and on the other hand like Fabergé-Eggs decorated with beads", explains coordinator Ingrid Bauer. In addition, there is a rich offer of arts and crafts such as watercolor and porcelain painting, paper collages, floristry, ceramics, Easter arrangements, patchwork, embroidery or Thuringian glass art. Visitors can watch some of the artisans at work. For example, pastry chef Bernd Siefert from Michelstadt in the Odenwald, who has been tempting visitors with sweet temptations at the Easter and autumn markets for five years.

In 1984, the committed Frankfurt-Westend resident and SPD politician Odina Bott and Renate Seiffermann launched the Easter market in order to use the proceeds to support the preservation of old churches. At first it took place in the "Bürgertreff Pferdestall" in the Westend, since 1986 in the Dominican monastery. "Only once has the Easter market been cancelled due to renovation work. That's why it's also taking place for the 35th time this year," Bauer tells us. After her family moved from Solingen to Frankfurt, Ingrid Bauer joined the Frankfurt group of the German Housewives' Association. Members of the Hausfrauenbund helped Renate Seiffermann set up the Easter market. After Renate Seiffermann withdrew from the coordination, Monika Oldenburg took over the organization in 1994 with the help of Ingrid Bauer. "Since the Easter Market was founded, it has been a central concern that it be free of commercialism and that the net proceeds be for a good cause, for example for old churches or to support clinic clowns. We have succeeded in this over all the years," Ingrid Bauer is pleased to say.

For a good 25 years, the net proceeds from entrance fees and stall fees have gone to the DMSG Hessen and local MS self-help groups. "In the beginning, relatives and friends had taken over the cashier service. However, due to time constraints, this was no longer possible. Through acquaintances we made contact with the DMSG Hessen. Since then, local groups have taken over the cash service, and since then the net proceeds have gone to MS patients in Frankfurt and Hesse. Help that is very close to our hearts," emphasizes Ingrid Bauer, who, together with Käte Westphal, has been in charge of organizing the Easter and Autumn Markets since Monika Oldenburg's retirement in 2011.

35 years of the Frankfurt Easter Market: Bernd Crusius, Managing Director of the DMSG Hessen, is impressed by how long this traditional arts and crafts market has existed thanks to the selfless commitment of volunteers: "The helpers thereby set a sign for civic commitment, for a togetherness of people with and without disabilities, and they contribute to pointing out the situation of MS sufferers and to informing about this neurological disease. For this they deserve our greatest appreciation." Thus, the DMSG Hesse presents its close-meshed advisory network and the varied program during the Easter market at the information booth and informs about multiple sclerosis.
