Frankfurt S-Bahn tunnel closed during Easter holidays

22.03.2018 | 08:03 Clock | Service
Frankfurt S-Bahn tunnel closed during Easter holidays

Commuters who also rely on the S-Bahn during school holidays are already familiar with this: in recent years, the entire S-Bahn tunnel has been closed several times so that the 40-year-old relay interlocking can be replaced by a modern electronic interlocking. This is to ensure that the highly frequented S-Bahn network remains functional and, above all, fit for the future. And since 2015, this has meant that the school holidays have been used to carry out the necessary work. This will be necessary four more times - the next time during the Easter holidays, From Monday, 26 March, approx. 1:00 a.m., to Monday, 9 April, approx. 4:00 a.m.

This will of course cause inconvenience, but you will still get to your destination. During the closure, no suburban trains will stop at the stations Taunusanlage, Hauptwache, Konstablerwache, Ostendstraße and Lokalbahnhof. However, they are still easily accessible - by underground, tram and bus. And if you're feeling sporty, you can hop on one of the many rental bikes from Call a Bike, which can again be used for up to 30 minutes free of charge during the tunnel closure.

Commuters who have a ticket for the route between Frankfurt and Hanau also have the option of switching to long-distance services and using their RMV ticket to travel on ICs and ICEs between Frankfurt and Hanau. In addition, holders of long-distance tickets that entitle them to travel in the Frankfurt S-Bahn tunnel can also use subways, trams and buses that are offered as an alternative option.

All information on replacement transport, construction progress and interesting facts about the work, <link https: sbahnbaustelle.de _blank>will be published regularly HERE on the Internet.

In addition, more than 700 posters at the stations will provide information about the tunnel closure, promoters will distribute a total of 80,000 memo cards on the trains, and digital displays will once again be available on site, as well as so-called passenger guides at many locations to provide help and advice.

WARNING STRIKE ON 28.03:

The expected warning strikes in public transport also affect the subways and trams in Frankfurt am Main. The union has announced that on Wednesday, March 28, all nine subway lines and ten tram lines will be on strike from the start of operations.

It is precisely the striking of the subway as the backbone of the city's public transport network and as a substitute transport for the S-Bahn that will pain many passengers. There will be large gaps even in Frankfurt's tightly meshed public transport network, which otherwise usually still offers alternatives.

Regional trains and S-Bahns will run as planned, the latter according to the construction site timetable. This means that stations close to the city centre such as Hauptbahnhof, Westbahnhof, Ostbahnhof and Südbahnhof can be reliably reached with them. It is expected that the bus lines will also operate, as their drivers are not employed by the public sector. However, they cannot serve as a substitute for inner-city rail lines, which can accommodate several hundred passengers per train. They can, however, serve some valuable connections. Bus lines 30 and 36, for example, connect Sachsenhausen and Lokalbahnhof with Konstablerwache and Bad Vilbel and Westbahnhof, respectively. The "tangential lines" 32 and 34 make wide arcs in the north of the city center from Ostbahnhof to Westbahnhof and from Bornheim to Mönchhofstraße. Line 64 to Ginnheim provides a connection from the main station to the Alte Oper and thus to the city centre; it runs more frequently due to the S-Bahn tunnel closure.

In the Internet timetable information, which of course already takes the S-Bahn tunnel closure into account, the U-Bahn and tram connections can be hidden so that only the alternative S-Bahns, regional trains and buses that actually run are displayed: Under "What with", select "Show options" and remove the ticks from "Underground" and "Tram".

The municipal local transport company traffiQ and the VGF recommend that everyone who cannot do without local transport next Wednesday should get the latest information as soon as possible before starting their journey. You can get it via the radio stations, on the RMV service phone 069/24248024, which is available around the clock, on the Internet <link http: www.rmv-frankfurt.de _blank>

Since the union only discloses its strike strategy to a limited extent, this information is subject to change at short notice. traffiQ and VGF will provide regular and as up-to-date information as possible on the strike situation on the Internet, on social media channels and with notices, especially to radio stations.

These lines are expected to operate despite the public service warning strike: all S-Bahn lines (S1 to S9) - but not in the S-Bahn tunnel, all regional trains, all bus lines.
