Frankfurt Sports Gala honors athletes of the year

Ffm. At the tenth Frankfurt Sports Gala in the Mainarcaden on Saturday, November 19, the Frankfurt athletes of the year were honored in front of about 400 guests for their outstanding achievements in the past year.

The awards were presented in eight categories: "Female Athlete of the Year," "Male Athlete of the Year" and "Team of the Year National" were decided by a public vote. In the special category "Team of the Year International," votes could be cast for Europa League winner Eintracht Frankfurt. A jury of experts decided on the winners in the categories "Young Athlete of the Year", "Disabled Athlete of the Year" and "Coach of the Year". They all either compete for a Frankfurt club or reside on the Main.

"Tonight's award winners, the nominees and numerous other Frankfurt athletes have truly achieved outstanding things this year. Therefore, I am very pleased to be able to honor and celebrate them for it at the end of the year in this special and personal setting, in the circle of the Frankfurt sports family," said City Councilor Mike Josef. He added: "It makes me proud to see, concentrated on this impressive stage, what top-class sport has to offer in our city. As a sports councillor, but above all as a Frankfurter and fan."

Sportswoman of the Year: Deborah Levi (SC Potsdam) - Bobsledding,

Achievements 2022: Olympic champion two-man bobsled

Sportsman of the Year: Oliver Zeidler (FRG Germania) - Rowing

Successes 2022: World Champion Singles, German Champion, European Championship fourth and World Cup winner

Team of the Year nationally: Löwen Frankfurt - Ice Hockey

Achievements 2022: DEL2 champion and promoted to the first Bundesliga

Team of the Year international: Eintracht Frankfurt - Football

Achievements 2022: Winner of the UEFA Europa League, qualification for the UEFA Champions League

Young Sportswoman of the Year: Curly Brown (Eintracht Frankfurt) - Athletics

Achievements 2022: U18 European champion in discus throw

Young Athlete of the Year: Marius Karges (Eintracht Frankfurt) - Athletics

Achievements 2022: U20 World Champion in discus throw

Para-Sportsman of the Year: Christian Riedel (RSC Frankfurt) - Wheelchair Rugby

Achievements 2022: As player-coach of the national team bronze at the World Games, European Championship fourth, World Cup participation

Coach of the Year: Sonja Kron (SG Sossenheim) - Dancesport/Jazz/ModernContemporary, formative coach of the dancesport division of SG Sossenheim

Coach of the Year: Byron Schmidt, Bryce Twiname and Adrian Mazare (SC Frankfurt 1880) - Rugby, formative rugby coaching team of recent years at SC Frankfurt 1880

Personalities from sports and society were involved as prize sponsors at this year's Sports Gala. For example, Sports Director Josef personally presented Olympic champion Deborah Levi with the coveted Doppelhenkel-Bembel. Soccer legend Alex Meier presented awards to the "Coach and Trainer of the Year," Sonja Kron of SG Sossenheim and the rugby coaching team from SC Frankfurt 1880. The DEL2 champions and promoted Löwen Frankfurt accepted their award as "Team of the Year national" from hr presenter Susann Atwell. As "Team of the Year International", professional cyclist John Degenkolb, Eintracht fan and himself three-time Frankfurt Sportsman of the Year, honored the Europa League winners from Eintracht Frankfurt.

Sports and radio host Julia Nestle led through the program of the Frankfurt Sports Gala. Mental magician Nicolai Friedrich and an acrobatic show by Art Artistica fascinated the audience between the honors. The band Waterproof accompanied the evening musically and provided at the final after-show party for the best mood into the night.
