Frankfurt tourism figures: strong start to the second half of the year

(kus) The month of July achieved a positive result with 486,976 overnight visitors (+ 3.6 per cent compared to the same period last year) and 813,093 overnight stays (+ 4.5 per cent). Although it was a holiday month in which business was largely dormant, an increase in domestic tourism and the private travel market ensured growth and good demand. For the first time, the 800,000 mark in overnight stays was surpassed in the month of July.

A total of 3,159,708 overnight visitors (+ 6.3 percent compared to the same period last year) came from January to July 2017, generating 5,382,515 overnight stays (+ 6.0 percent).

The bed occupancy rate is stable at 51.2 percent, which corresponds to an actual room occupancy rate of cirka 70 percent. In terms of overnight stays, the domestic market (+ 10.2 percent) remains the growth driver compared to the only slightly growing foreign market (+ 1.1 percent).

The largest overseas markets present a mixed picture: while the USA is stagnating at a high level, China is growing slightly (+ 1.8 per cent). The Arab Gulf States (- 8.3 percent) continue to show losses.

The Asian markets Japan (+ 15.6 percent), India (+ 14.4 percent) and Korea (+ 18 percent) show double-digit growth rates. The future markets Brazil (+ 15.5 percent) and Russia (+ 8.4 percent) are also growing significantly again after several years of losses.

Important European foreign markets are developing heterogeneously: While Poland (+ 4.4 percent), the Netherlands (+ 9.8 percent) and France (+ 3.5 percent) are growing, the United Kingdom (- 6.9 percent), Switzerland (- 4.7 percent) and Spain (- 5.7 percent) are losing ground.

The foreign market continues to be influenced by the effects of the tense security situation and the increased perception of security among travelers. Difficult conditions in the global economy as well as economic sanctions are also influencing travel behavior, leading to declining trends in certain markets
