Freiluftkino Frankfurt enters its seventh season

Freiluftkino Frankfurt enters its seventh season

Even this year it is always particularly nice news when an event can take place. When it's also a beloved series of events that allows attendees to get away from it all at special venues, the announcement that this may also take place during Corona Summer makes us really happy. We can announce such good news today: Freiluftkino Frankfurt is going into its seventh round starting on August 13. And again, as in previous summers, a very special location has been chosen, which will be transformed into an open-air cinema hall for 14 evenings.

After locations such as the former Deutsche Bank site (see photo), the Bockenheim campus, the courtyard of the former Cantate Hall or the terrace of Club le Panther, this year cinematic highlights of the current film year will flicker across the screen in the courtyard of the old police headquarters near the Frankfurt Trade Fair until August 30.

The new location is really a very special place: For nearly 100 years, Frankfurt's police headquarters was at home on Friedrich-Ebert-Anlage before it moved to a new building in 2002. The cultural monument, built in the early 1910s in a mixture of neo-baroque and neo-classicism, was abandoned by the state of Hesse. Temporarily still used as a club loaction and for product fairs, the building complex only found its future purpose after the sale of the site to the project developer GERCHGROUP. In the next few years, up to 400 apartments, offices, a daycare center and a gymnasium are to be built here. Thus, once again, a site has been chosen for the outdoor cinema that will change drastically in the coming years.

A colorful mix of arthouse hits and audience favorites will be shown again this season, starting with Melina Matsouka's road movie Queen & Slim. Also, the multi-award winning South Korean social satire Parasite, which was the first non-English language film to win the Oscar in the Best Picture category, or the social drama Joker and the Tarantino hit Once Upon A Time. In Hollywood will be featured. Other highlights include the surprise hit System Blasters, Pedro Almodovar's Pain and Glory, Celine Sciamma's Portrait of a Young Woman on Fire or Christian Petzold's Undine adaptation, in which Paula Beer and Franz Rogowski cast a spell on German film in the here and now. The closing weekend ends with the instant open-air classic Bohemian Rhapsody and a brilliant Queen firework display in the form of a 22-minute live-aid performance by the legendary band.

Of course, the current distance and safety regulations also take priority at Freiluftkino Frankfurt this year. A maximum of 250 spectators* are allowed to attend a performance. The entrance to the Freiluftkino Frankfurt at the Old Police Headquarters (address: Ludwigstraße 18, 60327 Frankfurt am Main) is only a three-minute walk from the Messe Frankfurt. The box office opens on the respective screening evening at 8:00 pm. The film starts when it is sufficiently dark. Advance ticket sales have already begun. In addition, there are tickets at the box office at a price of 10 euros (plus VVK fees).

All foreign-language films run in original version with German subtitles. As always, Chez Vivi will provide culinary delights with their Crêpes and galettes. Cold drinks of all kinds will also be available. Freiluftkino Frankfurt is a project of LICHTER Filmkultur e.V. and Daniel Brettschneider.
