It was a bit of a shock a little over a year ago when word came that the Café Albatros in Bockenheim had closed its doors. At first, a sign with the message "Back to the Future: Closed for Reno" indicated that this would only be a temporary condition. But after several months of no action, it was feared that the neighborhood hangout, so popular not only with students, was history. But fortunately, the dead often live longer - and this is also the case with the Café Albatros: Under new management, the Café has now reopened after its one-year break. Who now fears that the traditional house, which has attracted students as well as guests from the neighborhood and other parts of the city to the Kiesstraße since the early 80s, has completely changed after the one-year closure, can be reassured: It is by and large still the Albatros we know and love.
That's probably partly because the new manager has close ties to the Café Albatros. Until his departure in 2016, Sukhwinder Singh had worked in the kitchen of the district cafés for a full 13 years. Now Singh has taken over after the previous lease expired, and it was important to him, as well as the landlord, to maintain the original spirit of this much-loved venue. For Singh, it was an offer he couldn't refuse. After extensive renovations and minor Corona-related delays, the reopening could finally be celebrated at the end of August.
In fact, Singh has done a great job of making guests feel right at home here. Regulars will recognize a lot of the familiar, but will also notice that the food and drink offerings have been expanded a bit. So the Café Albatros now offers a daily changing lunch menu. And also guests who want to end the evening with a good glass of wine, can now choose from an expanded menu here. From breakfast, which is offered in different variations and sizes, to lunch and after-work drinks, you're in good hands here. And a real classic is also back with the reopening: the popular breakfast brunch, which is offered every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
With the return of Café Albatros, Bockenheim has gotten back a really nice meeting place. Sukhwinder Singh has revived all that used to make up the Albatros and added his own touches. Simply beautiful! As of now, the Café Albatros is open daily from 9am - 0am! Check it out (again)!
