Guest and overnight stays in Frankfurt at record high!

(ffm) "In 2018, 10,149,671 overnight stays (+6.3 percent) and 5,934,778 million overnight visitors (+5.9 percent) were registered in Frankfurt am Main. This means that the 10 million overnight visitor mark was exceeded for the first time last year. Large congresses and successful trade fairs, flourishing business travel and a growing leisure business gave Frankfurt dream results," said Lord Mayor Peter Feldmann.

"The tourism industry in Frankfurt continues on its record course. Frankfurt has now posted its ninth overnight stay record in a row," the Lord Mayor was pleased to say at the presentation of the official guest and overnight stay figures for 2018. "The figures show that we are on the right track with our efforts and investments in the tourism location." Together with Thomas Feda, Managing Director of Tourismus+Congress GmbH Frankfurt (TCF), Feldmann presented the evaluations, background and analyses of the statistics.

"For Frankfurt, limiting tourism marketing to a few source markets is almost impossible, so diverse is the origin of our guests. That is why we have to show presence in many international markets and further intensify our marketing activities, also using money from the tourism contribution," explained TCF Managing Director Feda.

Top figures were achieved both in the domestic market with 3.4 million guests (+6.2 percent) and 5.6 million overnight stays (+5.1 percent) and in the foreign market with 2.5 million guests (+5.6 percent) and 4.5 million overnight stays (+8 percent).

A cumulative 1.2 million guests (+9.9 percent) arrived from European markets and generated 2.2 million overnight stays (+11.1 percent). Important European source markets such as Italy (203,993 overnight stays, +18.4 per cent), Spain (212,951 overnight stays, +21.1 per cent) and France (154,096 overnight stays, +5.4 per cent) recorded above-average growth. The strongest European source market with 332,867 overnight stays (+10.5 percent) remains the United Kingdom.

Overseas markets also provided strong growth in 2018. With a total of 2.4 million overnight stays (+5.3 per cent) from overseas, the USA made up the largest contingent with 649,927 overnight stays (+7.3 per cent) and by a wide margin. It was followed by China with 340,268 overnight stays (+8.4 per cent). The Indian market also posted top figures with 126,517 overnight stays (+13.8 per cent). The Arab Gulf States again recorded increases compared to previous years, with 219,408 overnight stays (+3.6 per cent).

"The figures are impressive proof of our hospitality qualities in Frankfurt and illustrate how important the hotel and catering industry is for the tourism and congress location," Feda concluded.

Frankfurt's hotel market is one of the fastest-growing in Europe. With 298 accommodation establishments (+18) and 56,092 beds (+8.3 percent), supply continued to grow in 2018. "There have been many exciting new openings in recent years: Special concepts, top locations, luxury segment, mid-range or budget hotels. The Frankfurt hotel market is decidedly dynamic and a number of openings are also scheduled for this year. Nevertheless, the attraction for hotel operators and investors remains. The potential is there," explained the Lord Mayor. The bed occupancy rate is 49.6 percent. The length of stay has increased slightly to 1.71 days.
