Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonnard - Two Masters of Classical Modernism Together at the Städel

Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonnard - Two Masters of Classical Modernism Together at the Städel

For this autumn, Frankfurt's Städel Museum has come up with something very special: for the first time, two outstanding representatives of Classical Modernism will be the focus of an exhibition together in Germany: Henri Matisse (1869-1954) and Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947). This truly special exhibition focuses on the two artists' friendship, which lasted for over 40 years, and shows how they dealt with the same artistic subjects. Through 120 paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints, the show opens a dialogue between Matisse and Bonnard on subjects such as still lifes, landscapes, and the female nude.

The works of the two artists are complemented by several photographs by Henri Cartier-Bresson, who visited Matisse and Bonnard in 1944 at their country homes on the French Riviera. For this large-scale exhibition, the Städel Museum has been able to secure a large number of high-calibre loans from internationally important collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Tate Modern in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Pompidou and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington. Some works from private collections, which are otherwise not accessible to the general public, were also brought to Frankfurt for this show.

For Städel director Philipp Demandt, the museum's declared aim is to show the public unique masterpieces while always taking a new and fresh look at the protagonists of modernism. And that is precisely what this exhibition succeeds in doing quite brilliantly. From 13 September 2017 to 14 January 2018, the creative dialogue between the two exceptional artists can be seen at the Städel Museum. And on weekends in particular, the prospect of being able to see rare works by these two great artists is guaranteed to bring long queues outside the Städel once again.
