In the summer there is always cinema in special places in Frankfurt. The team from the LICHTER Filmfest, for example, has been bringing film enjoyment to unusual locations for several years with the open-air cinema, where cinema and big city flair combine to form an atmospheric whole. But now there is in Frankfurt open air cinema, which is really unique in this form Germany-wide: from 21 July to 13 August there is with the HIGH RISE CINEMA cinema on and over the roofs of Germany high-rise metropolis.
Always on the evenings from Thursday to Saturday there are current cinema hits and popular classics to see - and every week on a different roof. Great movies, skyline view included - this will truly be a breathtaking experience. The locations that could be won for this Frankfurt summer cinema are the Opernturm, the Taunusturm, the roof garden of the Skyline Plaza and the municipal green space office.
Since Frankfurt really plays such a special role here, a film must of course be shown on the opening evening that was shot (at least to a large extent) in Frankfurt. On the roof terrace of the Opernturm the HIGH RISE CINEMA starts on July 21 with Sönke Wortmann's comedy CONTRA. A scene of the film plays quasi directly at feet of the public, on the opera place. The connection between film and cinema location can not be better chosen for the debut.
Four fantastic rooftop terraces for High Rise Cinema
The OPERNTURM, located directly on Opernplatz, is visible from afar with its 170 meters and yet manages to bow to the most beautiful square in Frankfurt. The spacious roof terrace of its podium building offers ideal conditions for the High Rise Cinema: framed by one of Frankfurt's most stylish skyscrapers and the wonderful roof sculptures of the Alte Oper. So you don't know where you'd rather look - at the screen or at the skyline.
The Taunusanlage is Frankfurt's Central Park. The western part of the green Wallanlagen is surrounded by countless high-rise buildings. And right in the middle of it stands the second location of this unique open air cinema: the TAUNUSTURM. A two-part building ensemble that brings Tel Aviv to Frankfurt with its modern white façade and the High Rise Cinema to the heavenly realm of bank towers.
The roof of the SKYLINE PLAZA at the beginning of the Europaviertel is probably Frankfurt's most unusual park: Surrounded by skyscrapers like the iconic Messeturm, you can play table tennis here at lofty heights while gazing out over the Taunus Mountains - and on weekends after High Rise Cinema, there's even the option of camping out on this beautiful rooftop garden. Wonderful!
Next to the track apron north of the main station is one of Frankfurt's most beautiful office buildings: the GRÜNFLÄCHENAMT. With its six waistlines, it shrewdly imitates the undulating shape of the station concourse and, with its roof terrace, gives the High Rise Cinema an incomparable view of the high-rise clusters of the banking and trade fair districts.
Admittedly, with these locations, the films almost become a minor matter. Nevertheless, it must also be said that the team of the LICHTER Filmkultur e.V. has put together an ehr colorful and varied program, which has to offer current hits like "Top Gun: Maverick" or "Elvis" as well as cult films like "Pulp Fiction" or "Breakfast at Tiffany's". There is actually something here for (almost) every taste in movies.
