Historical Frankfurt image films available on DVD for the first time

You are still looking for an original gift for a Frankfurt fan? Then we have a very special DVD tip for you: The city of Frankfurt has always tried to show itself from a particularly good side to the outside. In the past, public relations did not take place on the internet or television, but in the cinema. There you could see walks across the historic fairgrounds or a little boy as a city guide and dolls riding the subway. These old films are really something special. Now ten such image films are available to anyone interested, as the non-profit association Filmkollektiv Frankfurt has selected films from the years 1909 to 1968 and now released them on DVD for the first time.

This DVD edition, with the inviting title "Bauten, Bürger und ein Bembel. Historic Frankfurt Image Films 1909-1968" offers proudly presented accounts of local events and the achievements of city government commissioned or initiated by the city at the time. "Frankfurt is a city undergoing continuous change. The films now published provide information, thoroughly entertaining, about the nature and genesis of the Main metropolis. Among other things, they take us on a tour of the International Air Show in 1909, bear witness to the long-lost trade fair architecture, document the city destroyed by bombs and the extensive reconstruction after the Second World War, and review the mammoth project of subway construction begun in the 1960s," explains Ina Hartwig, Head of the Department of Culture and Science. More detailed information on the complex production history of the individual films is provided in an extensive 60-page booklet that accompanies the carefully designed DVD edition. English subtitles make the films accessible to a large audience.

The initiator and publisher of the DVD edition, Felix Fischl, already organized an extensive film series in 2018 with 70 documentary and experimental films on Frankfurt's urban development history. On the occasion of the film series, he published in the Filmkollektiv Frankfurt Eigenverlag the publication "Wandelbares Frankfurt. Documentary and experimental films on architecture and urban development in Frankfurt am Main".

The DVD for 25 euros as well as the publication can be purchased in selected Frankfurt bookstores (such as Karl Marx Buchhandlung, Thalia), at the DFF - Deutsches Filminstitut & Film Museum, in Hessen shops and on request at kontakt@filmkollektiv-frankfurt.de (plus shipping costs) from the Filmkollektiv Frankfurt. Both were sponsored by the Cultural Office of the City of Frankfurt.
