Jil Sander presents world's first solo exhibition in Frankfurt

The internationally successful fashion designer Jil Sander has come to Frankfurt to open her world's first solo museum exhibition here at the Museum Angewandte Kunst. Jil Sander and museum director Matthias Wagner K worked for a year and a half on the concept and design of the exhibition. With "Jil Sander. Präsens" was not about presenting a retrospective of the influential designer's work. After all, it is not in keeping with her style to look back. She has always recognized current trends in society and culture with great sensitivity and developed something new, something modern from them. And that is exactly what she wanted to do now with an exhibition that uses a look back at her work to provide a new perspective on her work.

For this, Matthias Wagner K and his team made the entire Museum Angewandte Kunst available to her. Throughout the house, a mixture of expansive multimedia installations and individual tableaux has been created, which, in the interplay between exhibits, the spatial architecture newly created for the exhibition, light and sounds, allow a very multi-layered view of the works and of the designer herself.

One should not, then, expect a time travel through the various collections that Jil Sander has produced since founding her brand in 1968 until her departure in 2014. True, there are quite a few models on display, which visitors can also get very close to. But it remains a mystery when these pieces are from. For that is precisely what should not play a role in this exhibition. After all, the goal was to create a new, current body of work from a look back. Thematically, the exhibition, spread over some 3,000 square metres, is divided into sections such as catwalk, studio, cosmetics, fashion photography, fashion and art, architecture and even garden art.

Those who would like to immerse themselves in Jil Sander's multifaceted oeuvre and are able to get involved in the sometimes challenging concept of the presentation should definitely pay this exhibition a visit.

"Jil Sander. Präsens" can be seen at the Museum Angewandte Kunst from Saturday (04.11.) until 06 May 2018.
