Lively crowd at the opening of the Krönungsweg

Lively crowd at the opening of the Krönungsweg

The new Frankfurt Old Town was not only with us nice often topic. The closer the official opening in the summer of this year, the greater the already lively interest of the Frankfurt people in the Dom-Römer area seems to become. So it was not surprising that many people from Frankfurt took the opportunity to walk along the Coronation Path last Friday. More than 5,000 visitors came by late afternoon, around 2,000 of them alone for the guided tours offered by Lord Mayor Peter Feldmann that day. The guided tours with the Lord Mayor, for which interested parties could register in advance, gave the guests a special insight into the old town before the opening in September.

About the many participants Feldmann was particularly happy: "The numerous registrations show that the people of this city want the new old town. I am very pleased about that." Following in the footsteps of emperors and kings, he led the guests along the historic Coronation Trail, highlighting how intertwined Frankfurt's urban and commercial history are. The Krönungsweg was the main street of the old town.

What will be seen in the new old town and what stories the individual buildings tell, the Lord Mayor told the visitors: "Things found in old archives and warehouses have been reinstalled." The Goldene Waage, he said, is an example of what can be achieved when a refugee comes to Frankfurt. The house was built by the Dutch confectioner and spice trader Abraham van Hamel. Van Hamel and his family had come to Frankfurt as religious refugees from the Netherlands. The family's story and the house showed what was possible for ambitious people in Frankfurt. "When people come from other countries, they bring knowledge, experience and skills. The van Hameln family is a good example of that," Feldmann said.

There is still a lot of construction going on at the site. But it is becoming more and more apparent that an enrichment for Frankfurt has been created here - and primarily for the people of Frankfurt and not just for tourists, who will of course also enjoy this beautiful area.
