Living with a view of the cathedral and Römer

A first glimpse of the new Altstadt apartments - Mayor Feldmann: Quarter will also become a residential location

(kus) The 35 houses of the new Frankfurt Altstadt are already proudly stretching towards the sky these days. The interior work is underway, the facades are almost finished. It is becoming increasingly clear how the new quarter will enrich the city centre with its numerous architectural and craftsmanship details.

Frankfurt's Lord Mayor Peter Feldmann provided a first glimpse of the Old Town apartments during a press event on Monday, November 20. "The perspective is changing. Today, we are no longer looking primarily at a construction project, but at our own district in the heart of our Main metropolis, which will be one of the top residential locations in the region. The residents are already looking forward to their new home."

What life will feel like in the 15 reconstructions and 20 new buildings starting next year was vividly demonstrated by the tour of two apartments on Monday. Situated at the western entrance to the new district, the apartments in the new Markt 40 building "Zu den drei Römern" designed by Jordi & Keller Architects offer beautiful views of the Römer. The maisonette, located on the first and second floors, has a living space of 113 square meters and - like all the apartments in the quarter - is equipped with parquet flooring and tiled bathrooms. "Some of the apartments, like here in the house at Markt 40, are almost completely finished and are already waiting for their new residents," Feldmann said. Step by step, the remaining apartments would be completed, and nothing would stand in the way of the planned opening of the Old Town in September 2018.

The second apartment visited is located directly on the Hühnermarkt, in the house "Schlegel" with the address Markt 26. The reconstruction, designed by Hans Kollhoff and implemented by the office of Jourdan & Müller, was sold as a whole and, in addition to a pharmacy on the ground floor, houses two maisonettes extending over the first and second as well as the third and fourth floors. Feldmann took attendees to the top floor of the building, which offers spectacular views across the rooftop landscape and of the cathedral.

"The new Frankfurt Old Town, with its mix of apartments, shops, caf<x>ampersand</x>eacute;s and restaurants, will be a popular meeting place for citizens and guests of our city. I am already very much looking forward to the opening next autumn, when we will be able to officially hand over the Altstadt to the citizens," said the Lord Mayor
