Mainz city council visits Frankfurt's new historic district

The construction of the new Old Town is approaching the home stretch with visible steps. Already a few months ago we could make ourselves an impression of the building site and<link https: www.frankfurt-tipp.de ffm-aktuell s ugc ein-besuch-in-der-neuen-altstadt.html _blank> reported to you HERE about it. Today, Tuesday, we were allowed to visit the site once again. The progress that has been made over these months is very clear and gives a good idea of what the place will look like in just over a year's time when the work is finished and the new Old Town is formally opened in 2018.

The recent site visit was, of course, for a reason: Lord Mayor Peter Feldmann welcomed the Lord Mayor of Mainz, Michael Ebling, and the Mainz City Executive Committee to Frankfurt's Römer and did not miss the opportunity to present the important project to his guests directly on site.

(kus) Feldmann had invited his counterpart from the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate to hold the meeting of the City Executive Board for once outside the listed Arne Jacobsen Building, located on the banks of the Rhine. Michael Ebling and the members of the city executive committee - the equivalent of Frankfurt's magistrate's college - were happy to accept the invitation and met in Frankfurt's Römer.

The core of this meeting, said Feldmann and Ebling, lay in the idea of a united region. In FrankfurtRhineMain, both Frankfurt and Mainz benefit from their geographical location in the heart of Europe. At the same time, both cities are direct partners in important regional issues such as infrastructure, housing, local transport, economic development or job security.

"In the region, we have to solve major challenges together. In the course of globalization and European competition, we can only survive together as a region. Here, forces must be bundled across national borders in order to lead the FrankfurtRhineMain metropolitan region as a landmark into a strong future," Peter Feldmann underlined the metropolitan idea. He also emphasised this with regard to the will of the Rhine-Hesse region with the state capital Mainz, the city of Worms and the districts of Alzey-Worms and Mainz-Bingen to become shareholders of FrankfurtRheinMain GmbH.

"I can state with satisfaction that the cooperation is working well. On the subject of aircraft noise, we coordinate closely and in other areas, too, cooperation is on an equal footing. I am thinking, for example, of the cooperation between the transport associations and transport companies, the ticket interconnection system that has become a matter of course, and the future-oriented joint initiative of the transport companies to apply for the EU funding project for hydrogen-powered fuel cell buses, which will enable an important step to be taken towards keeping the air clean in the cities of Mainz, Wiesbaden and Frankfurt," said Mayor Michael Ebling about the cooperation between the two cities.

Following the meeting in the Römer, Lord Mayor Ebling and the City Executive Committee toured the reconstruction of Frankfurt's Old Town together with Lord Mayor Feldmann. On the approximately 7,000 square metre site between the cathedral and the Römer, 35 old town houses are currently being built, 15 of which are reconstructions and 20 new buildings. The shell of most of the buildings has been completed, and interior work is currently underway.

In recent weeks, the scaffolding has "fallen" on several of the old town houses and the facades have become visible. Coming from the Römer, the house Markt 40, "Zu den drei Römern", already shows itself to the viewers in full splendour. The neighbouring building with the house number Markt 38, "Stadt Mailand", has also lost its scaffolding. Around the Hühnermarkt, the central square of the quarter, work is also well advanced. House "Schlegel", market 26, can be viewed in its entirety as well as the house "Zur Flechte" (market 20) and the "Goldene Lämmchen" in the alley Hinter dem Lämmchen 6. Also completed are the half-timbering of the Red House (market 17) and parts of the pergola made of Main sandstone.

"The reconstruction of Frankfurt's Old Town is an urban development beacon project with charisma for the entire region," explained Lord Mayor Peter Feldmann when he visited the construction site. "People from all over the world are interested in the project and want to know how the city of Frankfurt is bringing part of its history back to life. The new city quarter in the heart of the Main metropolis will be a point of attraction, not only for tourists, but for all citizens."

Nearly all the buildings should be completed by the end of the year, Michael Guntersdorf, managing director of DomRömer GmbH, explained during the site visit. Currently, the selection of tradesmen for the shop areas and the gastronomic offers in the ground floor areas is underway. The new residents of the quarter will move into their apartments in the spring of next year. In autumn 2018, the old town will be ceremoniously opened with a celebration.
