More openings at the zoo for the start of the summer holidays

More openings at the zoo for the start of the summer holidays

Yay - summer holidays at last! In order to make this as pleasant as possible for the many visitors who want to take advantage of the nice weather and free time to pay a visit to the zoo, even under the still valid Corona restrictions, a few more relaxations have now been announced, which will apply from Monday, 06 July. For example, the Rhönstraße entrance can once again be used by annual pass holders and advance ticket holders from 09 - 18:30 each day. Please note: Zoo ticket sales will not be available at this entrance. New this year: With the Culture and Leisure Ticket (KUFTI) you can visit the zoo free of charge through the main entrance and the entrance on Rhönstraße. In addition, other animal houses will also open: The Grzimekhaus and the ground floor of the Exotarium will then once again be accessible to all interested parties.

Zoo Entrance Rhönstraße

Since the reopening in 2017, the zoo entrance in Rhönstraße can be used by holders of annual passes and advance tickets. A sale of zoo tickets does not take place there. Nevertheless, the side entrance is very popular, especially with the residents of the residential areas to the east of the zoo.

For Dr. Ina Hartwig, Head of the Department of Culture and Science, the importance of the eastern gateway to the zoo is confirmed in view of increasing usage figures: "The entrance in Rhönstraße is an important alternative to the main entrance at Alfred-Brehm-Platz, especially in the summer months. Due to the Corona crisis, the opening was unfortunately delayed this year, so I am all the more pleased that the entrance can now reopen in time for the start of the summer holidays on July 6."

Online ticket shop and zoo box office

What remains to meet safety requirements in times of pandemic is a limited number of visitors and spreading them over two time slots during the day when the zoo can be visited. The first from 9am to 2pm, the second from 2.30pm to 7pm. Only those who have booked a ticket and thus a time slot can use it to visit the zoo and use one of the two entrances. The reason: the number of zoo guests must be limited until further notice so that the currently valid security distances can be maintained. This regulation also applies to the culture and leisure ticket: only those who have booked a time slot online in addition to the ticket can visit the zoo via the main entrance or the Rhönstraße.

However, from 6 July at the zoo box office at Alfred-Brehm-Platz remaining tickets will be offered. So if you can't or don't want to buy a ticket online, you'll have a chance at tickets at the Zoo Box Office - but only while supplies last. So there is a guarantee for admission only when buying online.

Animal Houses

A bit more normality also returns to the animal houses: On July 6, after a long Corona hiatus, the spectacular Grzimek House reopens its doors. So does the ground floor of the Exotarium. The upper floor with the reptile department will remain closed until further notice due to roof renovation work. This means that all the animal houses have reopened except for the great ape house, for which special security measures apply. "However," said Zoo Director Dr. Miguel Casares, "we must also adhere to the current spacing and hygiene rules for the safety of everyone, including our animals. We sincerely ask our visitors to take care of themselves and others - for example, by keeping their distance and wearing mouth and nose protection. It's actually mandatory in all indoor areas of the zoo, by the way."

Additional information about the Rhoenstrasse entrance

The Rhoenstrasse entrance will be open daily from July 6 to October 31, 2020. All visitors who have booked a time slot in the Zoo's online shop can use the entrance. Admission control will be carried out by a service employee from an external service provider.
