New cider museum in Hanau: 'Geripptes Museum' is open

Already shortly before Christmas we had reported to you, that the "Geripptes Museum", Hesse's first apple wine museum at Hanau's Heumarkt, is finished. The Corona conditions had made an opening of the museum, however, so far impossible. But now there is the good news: on April 2, the "Gerippte Museum" officially opened its doors to all interested parties. This is the perfect time, as the Hessian cider culture has just been named an Intangible Cultural Heritage in Germany by the UNESO. There fits a further appreciation in the form of a museum but absolutely perfect.

From now on, the first exhibition "Bembel - Deckel - Gerippte", which was compiled under the direction of curator Jörg Stier, can be visited here. Special highlights are the largest Bembel and the largest "Gerippte" in the world. Both were already on display a few years ago as part of the cider festival at Frankfurt's Roßmarkt and have now found a new home in the Hanau museum. "The drinking ceremony, which is unique in the world, creates a link between production and craftsmanship on the one hand and enjoyment and conviviality on the other," says Jörg Stier, highlighting the special features of the exhibition. Originally, the museum was to be opened with a grand ceremony - as befits the theme of cider. This could not take place so far because of the pandemic and is scheduled to take place either in the fall of this year or in the spring of next year. "Together with our financing partners, the Main-Kinzig district, the city of Hanau as well as the Frankfurt-Rhine-Main Regional Association, we announced the completion of the museum at the end of last year. A big celebration will definitely follow," promises Jörg Stier.

Expansion of premises planned

So while the official opening ceremony is still to come, the next step for the museum is already being planned in the form of an expansion of the exhibition space. The cost estimates for an expansion of around 30 square meters have already been submitted by the sponsoring association Apfelwein-Centrum Hessen (ACH) e.V., and the financing is currently being clarified. "With the 'Apfelwein International' exhibition space, we want to highlight the importance of regional cider traditions. Because wines from apples are manufactured world-wide and so opposite these may be, nevertheless dwells straight therefore the mutual appreciation inherently. Changing exhibitions are planned" emphasizes the wine press master and adds: "We all very much hope that the expansion can be tackled quickly."
