(kus) In the second half of 2017, the Archaeological Museum Frankfurt will again offer exciting insights into Frankfurt's underground: on a guided tour in the casemates at the former Friedberg bastion of Frankfurt's Baroque city fortifications, visitors can experience 300 years of city history up close.
As Frankfurt's "Monument of the Year 2014", the Kasematten, with a walkable length of over 40 metres and a clear height of 4 metres, represents an imposing and high-ranking cultural monument. The tour on the site of the administration and care centre of the Orphanage Foundation in Bleichstraße leads from the current street level to a depth of 9.50 metres. Here you can not only learn why the people of Frankfurt decided in 1628, after much discussion, to build a (then) modern city fortification, but also why its construction took so long and cost so much. At the same time, a "vaulted passage" was only built at this one point, but at that time it was never able to fulfil its function. It was not until over 300 years later that it was to become of great importance to the people of Frankfurt.
The guided tour dates for the 2nd half of 2017, at 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. each day are: August 6 and 20, September 10 and 24, October 8 and 15. The participation fee is five euros, which should be suitably ready. A tour lasts about 60 minutes.
There will be two family tours for children aged 6 and over, on September 3, at 2pm and 3.30pm. Admission is free for children. Adult companions (maximum two) pay five euros each. This tour lasts about 45 minutes.

Please note: Access to the casemates is not barrier-free; there are no sanitary facilities on site. Depending on the weather, warm clothing and sturdy shoes are recommended.
