Rising attendance figures at the public library

People still read a lot in Frankfurt! In 2017, the Frankfurt Public Library was once again pleased with increased visitor numbers. Frankfurt's public libraries recorded around 1.47 million visits, a total of 3 percent or 45,000 more than in the previous year. Circulation figures are stable at around 2.76 million.

While the libraries were used somewhat less, the so-called Onleihe- i.e. the possibility of downloading media directly onto the computer boomed. Around 294,000 downloads were counted; this represents an increase of almost 90 percent. However, this is not synonymous with the often predicted decline of classic media: the physical book, the CD or the film remain as popular as ever and once again accounted for the lion's share of all loans in 2017.

In total, the public library now offers 597,000 physical and 169,000 digital media. The borrowers are as colorful as the city. Last year's favourite novel by Frankfurt residents comes from Italy: "The Story of a New Name" by Elena Ferrante. In the Onleihe, Charlotte Link and the Dane Jussi Adler-Olsen were popular with the crime novel "Selfies".

The non-fiction list was topped by the late Roger Willemsen with "Who we were". Among children's books, "The Three ??? Kids" and Englishwoman Joanne K. Rowling's "Fantastic Beasts" topped the list. The most popular feature film comes from France with "Breakfast at Monsieur Henri's" and in music the US metal band "Metallica" landed at number 1 with their album "Hardwire."
