Already in the run-up, the exhibition "Chagall. World in turmoil" aroused much interest. Since the opening on 04 November 2022, this interest has not diminished - on the contrary. More than 100,000 visitors have already viewed this surprising, exciting, and multi-layered exhibition at the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt. In order to better accommodate this very positive reception, the Schirn is extending the opening hours of the popular Chagall show until 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays from January 13, 2023. This means that even more people will now have the opportunity to visit the exhibition in a relaxed way after work.
But the success story from the Schirn is not limited to pure exhibition visits. Also the extensive education and mediation program as well as the events to the exhibition enjoy very large demand. Just two weeks after the opening, all public guided tours were fully booked, as were the additional dates offered within a very short time. A total of almost 1,600 guided tours and events on the exhibition have been held and scheduled to date. A special focus is on young people and school classes. Around 3,000 children and young people have already taken part in a guided tour of the exhibition with their class, around half of them in conjunction with a practical workshop.
The Schirn also continues to offer various digital and analog mediation formats, which can be used individually to accompany the exhibition visit or for preparation and follow-up, and which, like all the other offers, enjoy great popularity. The audio guide offered online and in the Schirn has been listened to around 43,000 times and the free Digitorial® (www.schirn.de/digitorial) has been accessed around 35,000 times. The SCHIRN MAGAZINE also features a podcast and additional articles on the exhibition. The catalog and the booklet accompanying the exhibition are also in great demand.
Sebastian Baden, Director of the Schirn, emphasizes: "The enormous response to our major Chagall exhibition fills me and the entire Schirn team with great joy - a beautiful and inspiring start to the new year. Above all, the many positive feedbacks from our more than 100,000 guests and the very great interest in our numerous educational offers show the intensive examination of Marc Chagall's hitherto little-known art of the 1930s and 1940s."
Until February 19, 2023, the exhibition illuminates a hitherto little-known side of the great artist's oeuvre: on view are works by Chagall from the 1930s and 1940s, in which his colorful palette increasingly darkens. His artistic work during these years touches on central themes such as identity, homeland, and exile. With some 60 haunting paintings, works on paper, and costumes from the 1930s and 1940s, the exhibition traces the artist's search for a visual language in the face of expulsion, persecution, and emigration. For the presentation, the Schirn was able to attract significant loans from numerous German and international museums, public as well as private collections.
LONGER OPENING HOURS
The Schirn will offer from 13. January 2023 until the end of the exhibition additional long opening hours on Fridays and Saturdays. The exhibition "Chagall. World in Turmoil" will then be open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Tuesday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
