Senckenberg Naturmuseum Frankfurt opens on 11 May

Frankfurters can look forward to the opening of another leisure and cultural facility: the Senckenberg Naturmuseum Frankfurt will be able to reopen its doors to visitors from Monday, 11 May 2020, after weeks of closure. Highlights such as the Saurian Hall, the Hall of Whales and Elephants and many other areas will then once again be open to the public during the usual opening hours. But of course there are restrictions here too. For example, the dioramas and two rooms of the special exhibition "Making Crises Visible" on the upper floor as well as the cinema on the first floor will remain closed for the time being to comply with the distance regulations. Play areas, media stations as well as the virtual reality offerings are also currently inaccessible.

But in order to be able to reopen at least part of the museum to the public, a protection and hygiene concept has been drawn up to protect the health of visitors, as well as that of the staff. "We sincerely hope that our visitors will support us and actively help us to comply with the regulations. If everyone cooperates, the originals of our exhibition will finally be accessible again!", appeals Prof. Dr. Andreas Mulch, director of the Senckenberg Research Institute and Natural History Museum in Frankfurt to the upcoming guests.

The museum may be visited in a maximum of two people or with members of their own household, in compliance with the official contact restriction. Mouth-to-nose coverings are required to be worn at all times and must be brought by the visitor or can be purchased in the museum shop. The mask requirement is waived for children under the age of six and those who cannot wear mouth-to-nose protection due to a medical condition or disability.

The number of people visiting will be limited and the minimum spacing rule of 1.5 metres between them will apply. Tickets will be sold on site at the museum box office in compliance with the spacing policy. Group bookings and guided tour bookings are unfortunately not currently possible. The museum bistro will be closed for the time being and the possibility of eating food you have brought with you is very limited. The lockers are also not available for use until further notice, but an unguarded cloakroom is available.

The openings of the special exhibition "Edmond's Prehistoric Kingdom - A Dinogravure in Frankfurt" and the new themed rooms "Marine Research" and "Deep Sea" have had to be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The museum will inform about new opening dates shortly. Parts of the special exhibition "Making Crises Visible" can be seen in the remaining rooms of the museum and the growing special exhibition "Shaping the Future - How Do We Want to Live?" with a new module on the topic of nutrition and agriculture is also open.

Those who still prefer to stay at home can also stay in touch with the museum via the newly created and constantly expanding online service Senckenberg@Home. Via the virtual museum visit with the Senckenberg App as well as with Google Arts & Culture, the most popular exhibits can be experienced online. All digital offerings - from the new film clip series Museum@Kinderzimmer for young researchers* aged five and up, to the video series "Senckenberg forscht!", online editions of the popular science magazine "Natur Forschung Museum", Citizen Science projects and campaigns on the Senckenberg social media channels - can be found at: http://www.senckenberg.de/athome
