What the Frankfurt his Büdchen or Wasserhäuschen, is the Berlin his Späti. Those kiosks, where - as the name suggests - you can buy everything you need to live until late in the evening, are of course also to be found in Frankfurt. A new opening is not necessarily worth a news report. But now a Späti has opened in Fahrgasse in Frankfurt's old town that deserves special attention. Because the kiosk "SILKYs SPÄTI" of the Berliner-by-choice Silke Thoss, housed in the gallery "Der Mixer", is an art installation that is bursting with creativity and sly irony.
For those who simply walk past the gallery, "SILKYs SPÄTI" will look like a typical kiosk. There are beer bottles, chip bags, candy bars, sausage cans, cookies, lollipops or coffee on the shelves. But a closer look reveals that all the goods here are made of papier-mâché. The artist has exhibited hundreds of these objects, which are based on well-known product classics, in her Späti. And even though the installation is particularly impressive as a whole, it's worth taking a closer look at the exhibited products, which can of course also be purchased, during a visit to "SILKYs SPÄTI". Because here each piece tells its own story - of artistic influence, of the confrontation with our consumer behavior or of the ironic-critical approach to other important issues of our time.
In "SILKYs SPÄTI" you can hardly get enough of the works, for which Silke Thoss got the idea during the first lockdown. This art project has created a very special place in Fahrgasse, which can be visited until February 26: always Wednesday to Sunday from 3 to 8 pm, or by appointment. Of course, the currently valid hygiene measures also apply here.
