Skyline view from the museum roof - The Städel roof is open

From Thursday, March 28, the new visitor terrace on the roof of the Städel Museum will be open to the public. From the Städel roof, visitors can enjoy an unforgettable panoramic view of the Frankfurt skyline. Access to the Städel Roof is included in the admission price of the Städel Museum. To mark the opening of the new visitor terrace, 500 free tickets are available, entitling the holder to visit the permanent exhibition and the Städel Roof. The free tickets are only available at the museum box office.

Lord Mayor Mike Josef opened the Städel Dach on Wednesday, March 27: "With the Städel Dach, we have a new place-to-be that will be a special attraction for Frankfurters and tourists alike. From here you can experience a magnificent panoramic view of our city, the skyline and the Städel are an integral part of Frankfurt. The Städel surprises visitors not only with its exhibitions and diverse educational offerings, but also with courageous building projects such as this one. My thanks go to everyone who planned the visitor terrace and made it possible."

Philipp Demandt, Director of the Städel Museum, comments on the idea of the Städel Roof: "Our new visitor terrace is the crowning glory of a visit to the museum. The view from the Städel roof is spectacular and stands for the museum's unique connection with the city and its civil society. As a Frankfurt museum, the Städel is supported by numerous private sponsors, companies and foundations. To this day, this extraordinary commitment makes it possible for our visitors to experience art, discover new things and come together in 'their Städel' - in a place where they like to be, be it in the collection, in the Städel Garden or on the new Städel Roof. I would like to thank the private donors for their generosity, which made the construction of the visitor terrace possible in the first place, and the architects schneider+schumacher and all those involved in the project for their commitment and the anticipation with which they have accompanied this building project. Like the Städel Garden and the other structural alterations and new buildings of recent years, the Städel Roof is part of a major master plan designed to enhance the museum's attractiveness and quality of stay."

At a height of 15 meters, the Städel Roof shines above the museum's main entrance. It is located on the central risalit of the historic Main riverbank façade. Work on the visitor terrace, designed by schneider+schumacher and realized with numerous project participants, began in August 2022. The architects were keen to create a place that offers an extraordinary view of the city. The listed façade was not altered. Inside, a space-saving solution was created for the staircase to the new visitor terrace. This was achieved by installing two steel spiral staircases. The two cylinders, each with 50 steps, are twelve meters high and create a link between old and new. The Städel roof is open to museum visitors all year round and can be accessed via the Old Masters Collection. As part of the construction work for the new visitor terrace, a Stifter Hall has been created in the center of the Old Masters Collection, which is dedicated to the founder and namesake of the museum, Johann Friedrich Städel, and his vision of a civic museum. As Germany's oldest museum foundation, the Städel Museum is still largely a privately financed foundation under civil law. Numerous friends and patrons follow the tradition of the founder and donate works of art, assets or bequests to the Städel Museum. The Städel Dach was also financed entirely from private donations.

All information about visiting the Städel Dach can be found on the website staedelmuseum.de.
