Registrations for GAME JAM still open until 15. December 2017
Music at its best moments - where it touches, surprises and sweeps you along - has perhaps always been the sound of play. And vice versa: when games rise above rules, victory and defeat, and develop a dynamic beauty of their own, we say, "There's music in that."
"Listening to play and listening to play" is therefore the motto of the PLAYSONIC FESTIVAL, leaving room for the unexpected and the surprising. From 25 to 27 May 2018, visitors will experience a multi-faceted programme of musical games and playful musical forms throughout the house and in the urban surroundings of the Alte Oper Frankfurt.
PLAYSONIC is curated by Josa Gerhard and Sebastian Quack from the Invisible Playground network.
At the heart of PLAYSONIC are four interdisciplinary FOKUS TEAMS, who will develop new works for the festival in the borderland of music and play. Each FOKUS TEAM is made up of members from the fields of composition and game design, as well as - as a "wild card" - a third artistic field. All team members will come together for the first time for PLAYSONIC.
Each of the four FOKUS TEAMS explores the connection between music and games with a specific formal orientation. This results in four formats with very different artistic characters and their own modes of operation: an evening-length ensemble project, an intimate chamber music format, an installation work and a work in public space.
The program is expanded by a variety of smaller experiments, workshops and discussion groups.
The PLAYSONIC FESTIVAL will be preceded by the PLAYSONIC GAME JAM from 5 to 7 January 2018, where the FOKUS TEAMS will meet at the HfMDK with the Ensemble Modern, the International Ensemble Modern Academy, students of the HfMDK, other musicians*, composers*, game designers* and test players* to play, discuss and create together. Within the framework of the jam, new JAM TEAMS will be formed, which will develop ideas for the extended festival programme. In addition, the FOKUS TEAMS and the JAM TEAMS will work in parallel on their respective projects in open jam phases, and in between they will repeatedly come together for joint playtest sessions to try out each other's unfinished games, receive feedback and make adjustments.
